When I was first trying to learn to cook I found The Boxcar Children's cookbook at half-priced books for really cheap and that really helped since it was all fun, referenced which book/story the recipe came from, and was at the same time geared towards kids so the recipes were easy. It really helped make learning easy and built my confidence so that I felt comfortable when I went to try more complicated recipes.
