I've got AFoIaF. It at least seems like they attempted to replicate what was in the books, but they also provided alternate recipes with substitutions. Because honestly, not all stores carry the ingredients listed.

Have you checked out the Redwall cookbook?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but THere's a Redwall cookbook!! I was obsessed as a kid when I read the feast descriptions. You just made my day, I'm so excited to look this up!

I have the Elder Scrolls one. Making sweetrolls is a singular delight.

I have Nanny Ogg's Cook Book, but I've not tried to make anything from it yet.

Same here. There are a lot of recipes in there that definitely appeal to me, but most of the time I barely have the energy to make box dinners, let alone cook from scratch, so who knows if/when I'll ever get around to trying any of them out. It's still a fun read even so.

I have that once - I believe we've made the Chocolate Delight with Special Secret Sauce, Dried Frog Pills, and my brother once made the Strawberry Wobbler for a party.

Is there anything made with apples?

Well, mainly apples

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean that one's just a good read too.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the first book I thought of when I saw the secret. A friend found a copy when it first came out and did try a few of the recipes. I can still remember exactly what the Dried Frog Pills taste like.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the concept but I always tend to assume that the actual books are just 100% rip-off no-effort moneymakers. I should be less cynical

I’ve got the Street Fighter one that just came out. Apparently Akuma likes Fruit Sandwiches...

Holy shit the Star Wars cookbooks are egregiously bad about this. "Tatooine French Toast" is not a thing. It's just french toast. The fucking stupidest french toast recipe I've ever seen, too.

I run into this a lot when I do themed Halloween parties and try to look up what other people have done, it's never canon foods and just regular food with cute names and vaguely canon-related decorations on them. I made full on New York style hot dogs for my Ghostbusters party, not just green jello.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, absolutely. I hate when I'm looking for fandom food and all I can find is twee bullshit like that, especially because it inevitably clogs up my search results >:c

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
When I see things like "Tatooine French Toast" I giggle and wonder where France is on Tatooine.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god, the wookie cookies cookbook is the WOOOOORST

At least it looks like The Powers That Be tried to correct the absolute dumbshit "bland food with made up star wars words on it" approach with the Galaxy's Edge cookbook, because that's more aimed at recreating food from the park that was intended to be new and different? I haven't tried making any recipes from it yet though.

The Aubrey/Maturin cookbook, Lobscouse and Spotted Dog, is pretty good. They even tried squirrel.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, I've never even read any of the books and I want to check that out. I love me some well-researched historical fun.

this is older than people think. I have the Peanuts lunch bag cook book from 1970. Some of the recipes in it are pretty good too.

I completely agree and honestly it's fucking delightful when the chefs/recipe-makers are really into it and the authors haven't been cheap about it.

When I was first trying to learn to cook I found The Boxcar Children's cookbook at half-priced books for really cheap and that really helped since it was all fun, referenced which book/story the recipe came from, and was at the same time geared towards kids so the recipes were easy. It really helped make learning easy and built my confidence so that I felt comfortable when I went to try more complicated recipes.

There is also a World of Warcraft and a Dungeons and Dragons cookbook!

(Anonymous) 2021-06-28 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually still use some recipes from the Babe (as in, the pig) movie tie-in vegetarian cookbook. It's simple enough for tweens and teens but there's stuff like asparagus risotto with pine nuts.

Another great one is the Hannibal (TV) cookbook. It was written by the food stylist from the show who actually researched and really cooked all the food that Hannibal served during the course of the show.
