I have some important advice to share: if you find a random sweet in your jacket pocket, try to remember the last time you wore that jacket BEFORE you put the sweet in your mouth. Especially if, just for example, you recently dug some old clothes out of storage...

Lmao what kind of sweet was it?

I advise the same for wine. If you can't remember when you last opened it -- even if it's been in the refrigerator, and it wasn't at most two weeks ago...get rid of it. Don't bother trying.

I'm embarrassed to say it was a piece of chocolate. Normally if chocolate is getting too old I can tell by the bloom (which is the white powdery stuff on old chocolate), but there wasn't any... But god, it was a little tiny piece and I still feel sick :-(

I had no idea about bloom! I'm of the sort (sadly?) that figures as long it's not moldy/fungal-y and it doesn't smell funny, it's good. This is not a good rule of thumb.

Oh, bloom isn't dangerous to eat! Sorry, I wasn't clear: when chocolate gets a little old, it gets bloom, which is caused by air and moisture affecting the sugar and fat in the chocolate. Bloom isn't dangerous, it's just a bit icky looking, and you can get rid of it by melting the chocolate and re-setting it; but it *does* affect the taste and texture (for me), and it's usually too much bother to fix.
Honestly, when it comes to sweets you're usually pretty safe? Like, with rock candy and so forth, that stuff is basically immortal, as far as I know.
