I am so Over the whole "Strong Independent Heroine wears hair loose because she's Wild and Free" thing that I'm ready to move to Over St, Overton, and change my name to Miss Overit.

I am a strong, independent woman in need of my hair not in my face

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! This made me especially appreciate the "hair tie" moment in Birds of Prey.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What moment was that?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
In the climactic fight, Dinah Lance is in the middle of beating up bad guys when she gets her long hair stuck over her face. She makes a kind of "argh!" noise and Harley Quinn rollerskates over to hand her a hair tie.

Apparently some people thought it was cringey, but I thought it was a sweet little jokey moment.

DA- oh, I loved that bit

That’s one of the things I liked about Moana. She ties her hair up every now in then in the movie. It doesn’t always stay up, but I appreciated it.

And Elsa secures her hair in Frozen II before trying to cross the ocean. It was a cool "Psyche myself up" moment.

I personally hated that scene in Frozen 2. Elsa takes her hair out of a (loose, but perfectly adequate) braid and redoes it in a tight ponytail to go into the water! As a swimmer who used to have waist-length hair when I was younger, I can attest that this is a terrible choice and she would've been far better off leaving her hair in a braid.

For a girl that age, she would probably have been champing at the bit to put her hair up as a sign of entering into adulthood. For a teen girl, loose hair would have been considered childish

What

is this a historical thing, I hope? Because that was not the case at all for me and the people around me

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Not who you replied to but yes, it was very much a historical thing. Loose hair was for young women, hair being up meant you were an adult and more grown up.

The movie is set in the last quarter of the 19th century...I'm going to assume that you and your friends don't hail from that era lol

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly!

I want a plucky heroine to let her hair down as a symbol of her freedom only for her plucky heroine song/speech on the hillside to be ruined because her hair keeps blowing into her mouth.

I honestly don't really care either way. Historical accuracy in how the characters dress/are styled matters to me about as much as fight-scene realism matters to me. Which is to say, I will prioritize the overall narrative effect over the accuracy/realism every time. If the thing is so wildly inaccurate that it ruins the overall narrative effect, then it's a problem. If it serves the narrative effect well, then I'm for it. If it largely works, then I'm probably neutral on it.

When I wear my hair down it gets tangled and in my way. I hate it! I have to put it up to do anything physical.

When I see characters with long hair always looking perfect it just reminds me of the hair/makeup team.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
But she does put it up when she's trying to look like an adult.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, the whole film was very on the nose in its pop-culture feminism.

This annoyance is so specific that i respect it, but I feel like it doesn't make sense with enola who was figuring out how to move in society by its mores AND do so while being unconventional. I think this actually makes sense for her, and most teenagers who are questioning how they fit into specific images, but less so as a trope for adults in situations where it's an obstacle.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
In Enola’s case specifically, it probably would have made more sense for her to follow the route taken by most feminists at the time and wear her hair up in the most utilitarian way possible. Defying societal norms? Check. Practical hairstyle that is unlikely to get in your way or catch on fire? Check. Conventionally attractive enough for show business? Probably not.

I mean I don't agree not the least because I said that enola was deciding how she wanted to be perceived between two (or more) options and that she wore a variety of hairstyles in service of that. I also don't think teenagers need to think practically in all moments, lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to think you're right about this. Her loose hair didn't bother me, because I think it conveys, visually, the effect the filmmakers wanted to convey. But if we were going for a style that was both IC and realistic, then yeah, I agree.
