I was watching some conversation the other day on Facebook from a LARPing friend who had run into this issue with people who LARP drow elves. Basically if you do an even remotely shoddy job with black body/face paint, yeah, it looks like blackface and that was pissing people off.

However! It was noted that drow skin isn't necessarily "coal black", but could be dark shades of purple or blue, and if people used that, it was less likely to be seen as reminiscent of blackface. I don't know this character or fandom, but in the picture it looks like her actual skin color is a dark midnight blue. So if you go that direction rather than straight up black, get a wig in a matching color, you could still be accurate to the character design without anyone likely to suggest you were trying to do blackface. (Though I mean, there might be some people out there who would take offense at dark-blue-face, but it would be kind of odd...? :P)

I believe people of “navy blue with pink highlights” color is a pretty small cross-section of the population, so you’ll probably be fine.

I LARP and yeah, larps have dealt with "dark elves" looking like black face in various ways. Some completely ban the use of paint to change the base skin tone and built the character options with that in mind, some stick only to gray/light blue/light purple with darker accent colors. I think you could do something pretty with a lighter version of that blue and lots of bright pink and black for the eyes and accents.

But if I were going to cosplay her I'd make a gd mask because I hate wearing that paint like I hate walking on wet grass in high heels.

Ooooh. I adore this comic. There are a lot of good options… but I definitely understand your concerns.

I mean...use a blue body paint with magenta. Situation avoided. Think X-Men - Mystique. Clearly a navy blue. No confusion.

People would bitch anyway because multicolour characters that are painted with anything other than pastels are clearly black coded. At least that's an argument I've seen too often to be an isoltaed opinion.

NAYRT

People like that are going to bitch about anything. Don't worry about them and have a happy life.
