132, 162

132. Granted, what you've said is probably true for some people. However, a) I've seen a number of fans of color discuss the issue, b) it's not just this one show, it's a pattern, and c) I object to the notion that you have to either drastically prioritize your issues or that you can only have one at a time. Why do people insist on saying things like "why do you care about x when you should care about y" and acting like all social issues are mutually exclusive?

In conclusion: NO.

162. I generally can't read fic that has a number of typos. One or two are totally okay and human (and can slip past even multiple betas) but I find once it gets more frequent it usually corresponds to the quality of fic. Plus, it really distracts me.

Why do people insist on saying things like "why do you care about x when you should care about y"

Seriously. If we "go in order," then it's going to be a long, long time before anyone gets to the "little things." Probably never. But there's a lot of people in the world with a lot of different passions. We should let people tackle things that are close to home for them rather than trying to force them into things.

Re: 132, 162

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And the thing I think people fail to miss when they do this is that the "little things" almost always connect to the "big things." It's not people getting upset because the actor doesn't look exactly like the character -- it's Hollywood having a habit of casting white actors as historically/traditionally/etc characters of color (it seems like recently it's been particularly with Asian characters, what with 21) especially when they are supposed to make up a majority of the cast. Which could then connect to another number of issues that someone more informed than me could probably explain better.

Re: 132, 162

Exactly. Bottom-up work is just as valid as top-down. Depending on who you're working on, it can even be easier, since people are sometimes more willing to give on little things than big things ("foot in the door" hypothesis as opposed to "door on the face" /psych major). So long as people are trying to change things for the better, I don't think people should be giving them a hard time. (Ahhh man, I just heard about the 21 thing, when I was looking for a floorplan of the Stratosphere casino as a RP reference. Hooray for following links all over Wikipedia, eh? I still like the movie, but that is really annoying. I would not have complained about the appropriate people being cast as Asians ;D)

Very, very good point! A lot of changes are gradual in this way.

Are you aware of the shenanigans regarding the Twilight movie? It's like those two amplified. Some people need to realize this is a pattern.

Re: 132, 162

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-12 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of the reverse of "missing the forest for the trees" -- you can change the forest slowly by changing the individual trees. Less noticeable at first, but sometimes, this makes people less resistant. Of course, it depends on the person. People are impossible to generalize.

Honestly, no -- I've stayed as far out of Twilight fandom as possible. I just stay in my cozy little Fire Emblem fandom, for the most part ^^'

Re: 132, 162

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not blame you for staying out of the fandom. It's crazy. I'm only in it for the lulz, and it does provide many of those.

BUT, basically, there are a bunch of vampires and a bunch of wolves, and all the wolves are Native American. For the first movie, they made a big show of holding specific casting calls for Native kids, and they picked a few, but the major role went to someone who isn't Native and got the part through his agent.

Come time for the second movie's casting, and they're doing this again because they need more wolves. Except that two of the secondary characters cast last time around report they've not been asked to return (yet), and one of them reported he heard all the spots have already been filled and the movie team is only holding casting calls to make it look like they're trying to find people outside of Hollywood.

It's an epic mess! Not quite as blatant as 21 and Avatar, I don't think, but this has gone on through two movies now, supposedly.

Re: 132, 162

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh man. That sucks. I've read the first book, and I was honestly quite intrigued by the idea of Native American werewolves (main characters whut? The side characters were much more interesting!). This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I find many Native Americans to be smokin' hot, but that aside, RAGE, HOLLYWOOD, RAGE. They're underrepresented enough as it is! This likely will deter me from seeing the movie even more than the sparkly vampires already did.

Re: 132, 162

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The books are awful, but I honestly feel like if someone else had taken control, cut out the creepy stalkerish vampire, and given more time to the secondary characters (the human kids and the wolves), it could have actually been an interesting, great series. Alas, it's not.

This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I find many Native Americans to be smokin' hot

The two actors in question in regard to the second movie are (aside from being unknowns, which is a plus!) are so cute, so if the reports are true I have no idea why they would be re-cast.

Re: 132, 162

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I'm well aware of how terrible they are (getting through the first was like torture, but I refuse to not finish a book, no matter how bad, especially when I got into it expecting it to be bad). I'd like, so far, to know more about Charlie (omg, gasp, I like the "boring, mundane father figure") and Jasper. Because they intrigue me. Jessica, Mike, Tyler... I wanted Bella to interact more with them. But ohhh, normal humans are so boring to her. ////wrists.

I'm going to have to google this, because I am interested.

but I refuse to not finish a book, no matter how bad, especially when I got into it expecting it to be bad

I'm the same way. I downloaded the first three books and had to force myself through them. Then the first half of the last book was leaked, and I actually -- I'll deny it later -- I actually went out and bought the last book because the second half hadn't been leaked and I had to finish it. It's like a Lifetime movie: you know it's bad for you, but once you start you have to finish it.

But ohhh, normal humans are so boring to her. ////wrists.

Normal human beings won't be pretentious with her and break into her house and cut her brakes. Where have all the good human men gone?

I do have to give the movie credit because it's actually better than the book, imo. They actually develop the human kids more and Bella actually jokes with them, and Charlie is adorable. He has a total bff-ship with Jacob's dad Billy, and he tries to do more fatherly things with Bella.

My roommates, combined, have most of them, if I'm remembering correctly. I'm just going to have to skip major parts of Breaking Dawn, because I predict it'll make me really ill.

Seriously. If my boyfriend tried to cut my brakes, that would be the end of that relationship.

CURSE YOU, making me waver back and forth! I'll probably add it to my Netflix at some point... Just because Charlie and Billy needed more interaction that wasn't making Billy look like a bad person in the book.

Re: 132, 162

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Breaking Dawn. It was interesting, to say the least.

And don't try to make it sound like I'm attempting to persuade you to watch! THAT'S ON YOU. I'm only saying if I HAD to choose, it would be the movie, because it's infinitely better than Smeyer's writing.

Exactly. Especially if you take that train of thought to its logical conclusion--why do you care about silly things like gays getting married when people are starving?

Ditto, though I've got to admit I'm bothered by the implication in that secret that someone who makes those kind of errors is illiterate. Wrong, yes, but illiterate? Someone's making a bit of a mountain from a molehill there.
