108. YAY TENCHI SECRET! ^_^ Man I loved that show. And I kinda agree on Ryoko. Tenchi just keeps her dangling, it's like come on!She'll do like anything for him! And the Ryoko Ayeka friendship is adorable :3

119. O_O; Holy cow. Kristen is such an untalented little jerk.

132. That bothers me a little too. "OH NOES THEY PICKED WHITE ACTORS FOR AVATAR!!!" Yea that's kinda shitty, but put that energy into something that actually matters!

141. XD I feel like if you hate Seinfeld it probably went way over your head somehow.

143. He's best in Xena!

154. That makes me sad. =( Why are people so opposed to them just being best friends?

Racism doesn't matter...?

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Because they're not protesting racism. They're protesting it not being what they wanted. There are many other ways to fight racism.

Wow, good to know that you're aware of exactly what they're thinking. Man, I wish I could do that.

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
XD I could say the same, since you guys think I read minds. No, I could never know a lot of people who have actually said that/written it, could I...

Re: 132

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm replying via email, so I have no idea what other commenters have said. And "not what they wanted" and being anti-whitewashing couldn't coincide, now could they? Sure, they might have actual actors in mind, but that doesn't make their point any less valid.

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It does when you're fairly sure some of these people will "omg fight racism" only to get a change of actors, and won't really...care about the issue when it's said and done. Not to say they won't care about RACISM, of course not, but they're not likely to put as much effort in. This isn't Avatards only, just a general observance of fandom. And it makes it hard to take what they're saying seriously.

And I find it really dissapointing.

Re: 132

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
The way I see it, if they (I say they because I A) am not part of Avatar fandom and B) have other passions) raise enough of a fuss -- if Hollywood actually took notice, then it could be the first step in possibly solving a larger problem. Some things take a bottom-up approach, and if this group of people cares about even just this issue for long enough to make some people take notice, then I think it's a good thing. Not everyone is meant to be an activist, but this could start a few people on a road to becoming one. And as far as I'm concerned, if even a few people are added to the ranks of those fighting racism, even for a little while, then that's a good thing. No contribution is too small.

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I just wished that they cared initially because racism is wrong, not because it has to do with perfect Avatar casting, you know?
karel: (Default)

Re: 132

[personal profile] karel 2009-02-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, of course. It'd be great if they cared all along, but to me, the fact that they're contributing (even if they're a little misguided sometimes...) and possibly learning and finding new avenues to pursue as a result of it... well, some will just move on once the movie's out and forget all about it, but others will keep at it. And it's those others that I'm happy about. A lot of times, people need some kind of "trigger" -- something that hits close to home to get them interested in a cause.

Re: 132

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I completely understand where you're coming from. It kind of annoys me too. But, basically, what you and the OP of the secret are doing is complaining about people who are protesting against racism. And however selfish their motivations may be, people protesting against racism is never a bad thing.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Many of us do.

Don't judge us all because you've seen one or two say they are only doing it because they want certain actors for Avatar. I don't get out much due to illness, a letter writing campaign is something I can do, and will.

Also, many of the people in Avatar fandom love Avatar so much is because it had different cultures and races, many of us are people of color. So the casting was a slap in the face for many reasons beyond 'they are screwing up my fav cartoon!!'

Get a clue.

Racism in the movie business totally doesn't matter at all! What are all these protesters thinking!

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Because they're not protesting racism. They're protesting it not being what they wanted. There are many other ways to fight racism.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because obviously you can read the minds of every single Avatar fan ever. How stupid of me not to realize that. Forget I said anything.

For the record, I'm an Avatar fan, and I couldn't care less about whether the movie sucks or not. If it doesn't, that's great. If it does, I can just ignore it. The only reason I'm pissed off about the casting is because yes, it's racist.

And yes, there are many other ways to fight racism.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS WAY IS WRONG.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people? Racism should be fought wherever it is, even in a movie for a children's cartoon. Why exactly would you want to stop people from doing so?

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Why exactly would you want to stop people from doing so?

Boy you like to assume. No one wants to stop fighting racism. We're just sick of Avatards. And yea, half of it IS "Wah! Not the actors I wanted!" You don't have to mind read, just be literate and read other people's posts xD

Anyway might want to take your ANGREE and go somewhere else, I'm not changing my mind that there's still more to worry about in life than "Zomg Avatar casting!". And before you try to find some way to turn that against me, I don't support racism, so don't try to play that card =)

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not assuming anything. I'm just sick of people going, "oh, why don't you go do something worthwhile with your time." Honestly, even is it is just people getting angry because they're ruining a show they care about, I'm just glad that there is such an uproar in the first place. Some decades ago, whitewashings like this would have passed by without comment. It shows that times have changed, though not as much as they should have.

And yes, I completely understand being sick of Avatards. So am I. (I like the show, but I stay far, far away from the fandom, and even then I sometimes wish they'd all just disappear.) But the point here is that yes, this is something worth getting upset about. Just saying.

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is - a lot of people who claim they're fighting it for racism, wouldn't actually put this effort in if it wasn't Avatar. If something else was happening, more horrible than casting (like something violent), I doubt many of them would say a word. But suddenly it's Avatar related and they're "involved". It's almost insulting. You could say "yea, but it got the point across racism isn't okay."

Not really. They get the cast changed, they go right back to the couch and don't think about it again. That's what bothers me.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
But see, the thing here is that you don't know these people. Many of them are like you say, I'm sure. But many of them do indeed care about racism, and fight it in other ways, and unless you have magical internet mind-reading powers, you can't really tell. So what, do you just dismiss everyone who's complaining about it as lazy, even if you don't know a thing about them?

There are many people in the world who never care about certain issues until it affects them personally, even through a cartoon they watch. It's bringing the issue of racism in the movie industry to the eyes of people who might never have thought about it before.

Myself, I'm just glad the issue is being raised.

Re: 132

magical internet mind-reading powers

You already used that move on me and I shot it down, please try again.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Because that was totally the entire point of my comment.

But I suppose that if you're more interested in nitpicking a bad joke I made rather than actually addressing the point of what I said, I suppose our discussion is over with.

Re: 132

Oh, and, talking about turning things against people?

I'm not changing my mind that there's still more to worry about in life than "Zomg Avatar casting!"

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I never said that, and I'm also sure that only an idiot could ever think something like it. But just because there are more important issues in the world doesn't mean we're not allowed to care about the smaller ones. Our capacity for caring about issues is not a zero-sum game.

Re: 132

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
The point of the secret was that there are other issues. That sentence didn't come out of thin air. Stop nit-picking before you hurt yourself.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I know it didn't come out of this air, thanks. My point is that the fact that there are other issues has absolutely no bearing on whether we should fight for this one.
