No, it really isn't. Maybe for the people you've talked to, but on the whole...no.

Racism in Hollywood casting is the issue. The casting of white people when the source material calls for asians/pocs. It's the same issue for that movie 21. It's not about the actors not looking anything like what the fans want them to. The bigger issue here is, when you have capable, poc actors who are available and you cast white, no-talent actors for the part, there is something definitely wrong. There is underlying racism.

And boy I suck at explaining things. And maybe you're one of those crazies that will deny the show is Asian-influenced or something. So I'm just gonna stop there. =\

I do understand why people believe it's an issue, but I'm really on the fence about most of their priorities. Especially since this isn't exactly new for a fandom to explode over casting choices. I can relate having been somewhat bothered over WETA's decisions to cast white actors in the Eva movie when the setting is in fraking Japan.

I was actually wrong to make any sort of proposition that they should be focusing on "important matters" because this is what they care about; and if their intentions are pure, all the power to them.

I'm very sorry to have upset you.

No, it's okay. You didn't really upset me, I'm just...on edge because it's frustrating to keep repeating these things over and over and try to make people at least understand, ya know? If I came off as rude, I'm equally sorry.

I can relate having been somewhat bothered over WETA's decisions to cast white actors in the Eva movie when the setting is in fraking Japan.

YES! Yes yes, that's exactly it!

It's understandable for you to be skeptical because fandom is crazy (especially the retarded Avatar one), and I don't blame you, but it's exactly like your example. The casting is all wrong, considering the setting and culture in the source material. And actually, people could just stop there but alot of people just take issue with pushing aside POCs in favor of white actors (espeically ones that hardly have acting skills to pull off the characters, or are just there to draw in teenybopper crowds). It happens way too often in movies, and it shouldn't.

Thanks for understanding. :)

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that the casting is mostly because of the industry wanting a majority of famous people attached to it in order to attract said teeny boppers. It's only second knowledge to this weird ass tween industry that every 12 year old girl is going to want to see Jesse McCartney or Miley Cyrus in crap (not exactly the best example for Avatar, but the point is merely generalized).

Same goes for Keanu Reeves. He was probably casted more so for his fame than his actual acting ability or likeness to Spike in Cowboy BeBop.

I don't think you came off as rude at all. At least you're not trying to pass me off as some racist super villain for not denying that the fandom can be batshit insane, right? lol

Be proud, you're a reasonable person and I respect that. :)

Re: #105, 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess you're right, but it's just pretty weird, because the creators of Avatar were all "HAY IT'S GONNA BE A PRETTY FAITHFUL ADAPTATION! WE'RE INVOLVED!" and the director said he'd pick all-unknowns for the main roles. ): But Hollywood had other plans, I guess.

It's funny you should say Jesse McCartney...he was going to play one of the main characters in the Avatar movie until he dropped out for "scheduling conflict." But they still have some random guy from Twilight to reel in the tweens. *sigh*

Oh god...why did you remind me of the Bebop movie?! *cries forever*

And chyeah, no one in their right mind would say the Avatar fandom isn't batshit insane. I mean, I love the show to pieces but seriously...just...ugh! lol

I knew Jesse McCartney was originally involved (he was still a prime example) and just actually learned they replaced him with Anwar from SKINS. I'm not an Avatar fan, but that's just wrong on so many levels. Not because of race issues, mind you, but because it's just like Keanu as Spike: wrong for the character.

Re: #105, 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I don't know much about him, actually. I haven't seen anything he's in, so could you fill me in? Why is he bad for the part? :x

As for me, I'm just glad it's not Jesse Fucking McCartney.

Dev Patel is known for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire and SKINS. He's a fabulous actor in his own way, but doesn't seem Zuko-like at all. It's just out of character.

(Broken record time:) Like how Keanu lacks the smug snarkiness of Spike.

Then again, I haven't seen the show as much and maybe I'm being too hard on Patel for his usual Goofiness?

Re: #105, 132

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, see, I haven't seen either the movie or SKINS. So yeah. I have heard alot of people say that he'd be a better Sokka though. And I've seen a couple of interviews with Dev, and he does seem goofy, which fits Sokka. Eh...

Either way, I still think that having someone who can actually ACT is better. :)

And all Keanu can pull off is "emotionless". Argh, just thinking about him being Spike is making me brain hurt.

I don't think Dev looks the part for Zuko

I agree with other fans opinions that he screams Sokka
