I have rarely seen a continuation of derivative media (i.e. not an adaptation of the sequels of the original medium) be as good as or better than the original medium or it's first adaptation, unless the first derivation was barely an adaptation to begin with. I think, even though Neil says he and Terry had an outline of a sequel ready to go, that it makes sense to be wary.
The fandom is a different matter imo, and I don't think wariness of the second season is actually evidence, but yes they were entitled to begin with.
