I was really surprised when I realized that they must be twins when I rewatched this movie. My preferred headcanon is that they're Irish twins. That could fit their dynamic bc it seems Ferris is babied and yet Jeanie is jealous of the attention he gets. Plus it seems like Ferris would be a "gifted" kid so he would be put in the same class as Jeanie.

Yes, but a lot of families put more responsibility on the eldest daughter and expect her to be mature, when sons get away with more.

While he might be changing his grades every year, he clearly does not get the grades to be seen as gifted. There's also a bit of 80s gender tropes going on, so the baby-ing is not surprising.
