I am trying hard not to leave “I usually don’t like X, but…” comments. I mean it as a compliment, saying that this author did something unusual and particularly good that stands out to me. But I get that it can be a bit “I’m not like other girls/readers”.

as a writer who sometimes does off the wall stuff, it's all in the phrasing. I would never take a proper compliment as the commentator trying to prove they're not like the other girls. start with praising what you really did like, then slip in "[X tagged thing] isn't my usual jam but you made me like it!" at the end. Completely a compliment, no harm no foul, and I'd even go so far as to say any writer who got angry at it at that point, the reaction says more terrible things about them than it does about you the reader.
