Personally I think, "I'm not usually into [type of fic] but [praise for fic which is exception to one's personal rule]" is high praise, and is undoubtedly meant as a such. Someone is saying your writing is so good it sold them on something they are disinclined to like.

But that's very, very different than, "I would like this fic more if it weren't the type of fic it is," which is just a criticism, and not even a useful one at that.

I can 100% relate to the feeling of "If this porn were less porn and more story, maybe I would actually enjoy it," because pure porn just doesn't do anything for me (with very, very rare exceptions). But I would never leave a comment to that effect on someone's work because, like, they obviously know what they wrote. Pretty sure it's pure porn on purpose, lol.

Agree. I know absolutely zero about Batman/Dick Greyson/Jason Todd, et al, except for the bits i've learned via fandom osmosis.

But there is *one writer* on my subscribed list who writes AMAZING Bat!verse stuff, and the strength of their writing in other things is what made me click on that fic to begin with, when normally I'd totally ignore it.

And i'm glad I did!

Ooh, I'm a sucker for good batverse stuff. Please can I ask who the author is?

I second the recommendation of thepartyresponsible’s fic! I had never read any Batman/DCU stuff, but got into it through some of their MCU/DC crossovers.

I've never understood why writers dislike getting comments along the lines of "I don't normally like X, but I really enjoyed this story". How can that be considered anything but a compliment, unless the very idea that there exists a person who is not 100% into whatever you have written is somehow offensive to you.
