I think in all likelihood they want to know what the reality is so they can be vague in a way that feels more deliberate and informed, as opposed to being vague in a way that amounts to pure bullshitting.

I’m that way about stuff. As a writer I’m super bad at bullshitting (and very, very envious of people who are good at bullshitting). When I try to bullshit my way through something the quality of my writing drops hideously. Knowing what the reality is gives me a way to orient myself.
