Same here. I've never _written_ a complete fanfic; I give up on every idea I have because it's too big of a hassle not only fact-checking, but also trying to fill all the blanks in the source material. Original fiction is easy since I can pull anything outta my ass and nobody will argue that it's incorrect or out of character.

I feel like I'm in the middle. As a origfic writer who started in fanfic, there's aspects I love about fanfic that I hate dealing with as a writer, and those small world building details are one of them.

I've written original stories my whole life but fanfiction (and having an audience) taught me how to structure and finish stories. Now that I've been out of fandom for like, gosh, eight years, I sometimes feel like I've forgotten how to complete stories. I feel a lot of pressure to get my original work "right" but fic, I'm more forgiving of. And the deadlines for fests and stuff, oh my gosh, that was wonderful incentive to finish crap. In terms of fic, I was very interested in canon authenticity but shit, every time I read an old fic, I never believe the romantic progression ("THESE two?? Get together?? Yeah right!").

I guess since I started in original fic (as a child, but a lot of them had full on world building and maps and history lol) there's a fair amount I agree with here. I make the rules. I create the stage etc. In fanfic, if I'm trying to keep true to the source material, then I agree. There's a lot of research going etc. However, if my original fiction takes place in this reality, or something to that effect, then I need to do research on the way certain things work -- much like how I do research when I'm doing fanfic. With fanfic, sometimes i will take some artistic license and tag the fic "canon divergent" or "AU" or get fuzzy on details if I've grown lazy. See that HP fic based on their legal system/the Death Eaters that I've yet to complete and fuck it I'm just gonna make things up.

I was going to suggest Nirvana in Fire, but I'm not sure if it fully counts as wuxia. It's more of a historical political drama with wuxia elements, I think? But if you want women, plural, with agency in a cdrama, it definitely has you covered, on pretty much all ends of the moral spectrum.

Are you done with Wuxia in particular or c-dramas as a whole? (Yes, I do know what you mean about meandering plot and convenient blood-coughing.) Ah, titles based on danmei novels tend not to have big female parts.

As someone else ITT said, Nirvana in Fire has a lot of female characters with brains and agency. Some people are a bit messed up but they come by it honestly.

The Long Ballad (for all its meandering plot) has a female, somewhat gender-fluid lead who ends the story independant and happy.

Yeah it sounds like you don't get along with the more a-typical Wuxia shows, and there's nothing wrong with that, but Wuxia is very tropey as a genre and if you don't like the tropes, you won't like most, if any, of the shows.

Other's have suggested the more historical dramas, and they are usually much more grounded with their characters and stories, but at the same time if you're done with all Chinese shows then I won't sit and convince you to give a different sort a try. Just stop trying to watch them so it doesn't ruin your own personal happiness OP.

I don't think it'd be unreasonable of you to say, "You know, whenever you ask me for information like this, you usually end deciding to leave the details vague. Maybe that's for the best?"

And definitely do not sacrifice a single minute more answering your friend's questions than you want to give. That's a surefire route to resentment and a friendship-ender.
