Blech.

I went on a date with someone to a really fancy restaurant. The wait staff was nice, the decor was lovely, and the food was beautifully presented, but it was so damn bland. I had fried fish and couldn’t taste anything except the oil they used to fry it. I tried my date’s food and it had almost zero flavor to it as well. Each dish cost around forty bucks too.

A really flat lasagna with three layers of not al dente pasta and watery sauce. Never again.

A tilapia dish topped with avocado that took over an hour, and arrived only half cooked and with no avocado.

I was a huge dumbass once, and ordered "butter chicken" at some podunk restaurant in my hometown. I always forget that picking anything non-Western at a restaurant that mainly does Western food (especially if it's in a small town) is a terrible choice. My butter chicken basically just tasted like tomato sauce with chicken in it, and there was no naan, not even some bland store-bought stuff.

Oh! My previous anecdote has reminded me of the time I went to an AYCE Chinese food place in my hometown. It was fine, because I actually LIKE the very "Americanized" style of Chinese food you get at AYCE places. BUT. for some odd reason they also had California rolls, lol. I took a couple because I love sushi, but oh man. They did NOT use sushi rice on those rolls. Whatever rice they did use was extremely mushy and glutinous. It was basically like eating a big glob of starchy paste.

A vegetarian noodle concoction that had three different squiggled sauces on top.
Looked Instagram-worthy, but tasted atrocious.

Didn't actually eat anything.

This was at Lincoln, just outside the Cathedral. A fancy tea-room with wonderful cakes in the window. Once inside, you could see the cakes were a magnet for flies. We went for sandwiches instead - we were hungry. They took ages to arrive, the waitress tripped and the sandwiches went flying. She gathered them up and disappeared. At which we made our excuses and left because we had a feeling they might just be rearranged on the plates.

This was decades ago. Hopefully the place is under new management.

I went to Applebee's once. Food was microwaved and frozen inside. They were vacuuming the disgusting carpet around us while we ate (a massive family with multiple high chair children that threw everything on the floor sat next to us). But surprisingly the house white wine was good.

Received cold, stale nachos at a restaurant as an appetizer. Didn't stick around to order a dinner, nor did we pay for the nachos. Left right away.

I hope the nachos were complimentary.

Clearly they were not, since otherwise not paying for them would not have been noteworthy.

So you left without paying for food that had already been delivered. That's a crime in most places. All I'm saying is maybe you should have left that detail out, because it doesn't make you sound so great.

And just to add, even if it's not what you're supposed to at a restaurant, I can still emphasize. Cold, stale nachos should be considered a crime unto themselves.

Oh please. As long as they didnt eat most of the dish before leaving they're fine. If they'd complained to the manager the nachos would have been comped anyway. None of the restaurants I've worked at would ever refuse to comp a dish in that scenario. And if a restaurant DOES refuse to comp a dish that was so bad you wouldnt eat it, then fuck 'em.

I've had a few really bad restaurant meals but it was so long ago I can't remember them except for how shitty McDonald's food has always been.

A beachfront place in my hometown that served a pasta primavera with overcooked pasta and vegetables that tasted simultaneously raw and like they'd spent a year or so forgotten in a freezer.

Runner up was a diner in Vegas that boasted about the fresh homemade fruit toppings for their pancakes and waffles. None of us had ever seen canned fruit pie filling used as pancake topping before. It was practically gelatinized.

Two that always come to mind (although I guess they're less ~restaurants and more...fast goodish?)

- 1: enjoying one of my favorite meals at a Chinese takeout spot i used to frequent. Happen to take a look down at my half bitten chicken to see a roach. Inside. Obviously, this means it was an issue with whoever their chicken/meat provider is, but I legit couldn't finish the meal, avoided that dish for a good while, and still haven't gone back to that spot.

2. Was a vegan/trendy healthy fast food option (think something like...what Chipotle is to Taco Bell, except a la Fields good chicken or Sticky's. (On that note Field's Chicken is not that good. Like...decent. But...it needs more flavor. Had a good one at Sticky's). Anyway. Ordered the Mac'n'Cheese. The

Wtf.

I was so mad. I finished it, of course, I mean I spent well over 5 or 7 bucks on that meal, you damn right I'm gonna finish it. But what a disappointment. I love Mac and cheese! I dress up my boxed shit. I adore baked Mac. Please don't insult me and do a disservice to the leaps and bounds a lot of vegan food has gone through over the last five years. You have no excuse. None. I have not returned and fear a flavorless waste of my money should I ever turn to them with an empty stomach.

Holy crap, #1 is horrifying!

I found some sort of larva in my Chinese food once a really long time ago, I had forgotten about it till just now! Never went back to that restaurant.
