Re: Loki spoilers
(Anonymous) 2021-07-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)Re: Loki spoilers
(Anonymous) 2021-07-12 04:08 am (UTC)(link)My thoughts about Loki/Sylvie are super complicated and hard to articulate, but… Yeah, IDK, I guess first of all I just feel like it doesn’t mesh well with the overall themes of Loki’s story? I mean, there’s something fundamentally non-normative about Loki, and about Loki’s struggle with himself and how he fits into the world (or doesn’t). And IMO the fact that he feels so innately non-normative makes the idea of him finding fulfillment--and, to some extent, self-actualization--through a heterosexual romantic relationship feel like it’s in conflict with the rest of the character’s story.
Also, Loki’s growth as a character is so tied to Sylvie, and his recognition of her cause as a good and important one, and his decision to help her and follow her lead at the risk of his own life. Like, that is the predominant way that Loki’s character growth is forged and demonstrated. Therefore, I think it actually undermines that a bit to give him romantic feelings for her, because it’s pretty well established that romantic infatuation can often masquerade as selflessness and self-betterment, even when the effects may later turn out to have been shallow and temporary. In short, it’s very easy to want to give of ourselves for someone we are freshly infatuated with. Therefore, I would’ve found his relationship with her a stronger and more interesting one if romantic feeling were not a factor.
Also, we are led to understand that on some level Sylvie is another version of Loki, and he of her. Giving him romantic feelings for her basically functions at cross-purposes to that aspect of their dynamic. It makes his relationship with her too much about him relating to an “other” and takes the focus off of the fact that he is, on some level, relating to his own potential self, and witnessing that other self demonstrate how to be better; how to have integrity and be superior because of it.
And finally, as you say, it just feels very rushed. And I do hate when characters decide to talk about their ~feelings~ when extremely important other shit is going on that just make their feelings talk feel extremely trivial and like they have no priorities or something. So there's that.
The reasons why I think that Mobius--if anyone--is best suited to be the LI are at least equally as complicated, but as this is F!S an not my tumblr account, I think I’ll stop here lol.
