Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
[Unintelligible]

Years later, I found out it was:

Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanting
To be haunted

Ugh, I feel this. I hate listening to music that has a great tune, or interesting textures or rhythms, and then looking up the lyrics and being like… really? This is too stupid, I can’t enjoy it any more.

So many things turn out to be love/sex based. And while I don't think those are unneeded, I do wish a lot weren't.

And this is like, in rock. Though I wish it was less so in pop, as well

Back when i still listened to current music shows I'd occasionally have an uncomfortable asexual realization about how many songs in the charts were heavily sex based and then I'd stop listening to anything sung in english for a while in an attempt to reboot myself lol.

I couldn't tell you whats in the top 20 nowadays because i just listen to playlists I've made. It's not that there aren't any love/sex songs in them but at least i know what they're about.

If i turn on the radio I have no idea what I'm submitting myself to lmao

I have that issue about 90% of Elton John songs. I heard the lyrics he wrote were even worse than Bernie Taupin's. He should have fired Bernie Taupin.

I forgive them everything for this:

So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough

I dunno, that song he did about Tony Danza was pretty good.

(Yes, I'm joking. Weirdly, I also have auditory processing issues, but although sometimes I cannot parse speech for the life of me and repeat "what was that?" ten times and still have no idea what someone just said, I'm usually better at figuring song lyrics out than most of my friends.)

To be fair, Elton knows he's a terrible lyricist! Bernie Taupin does some great stuff and some terrible stuff, often in the same song.

I don't think I have any kind of disorder, but I've always had trouble understanding lyrics and it's fine by me.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Waaaaaaaaait, is being unable to hear the lyrics to a song unless you look up/read the lyrics considered a form of auditory processing disorder? I just thought my brain just couldn't do that.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I just thought it was because of poor hearing (my hearing is getting pretty bad) or because the singer was mumbling too much while the rest of the song was too loud.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
It can be! It can also be due to poor quality sound output, an unfamiliar accent or language, other distractions going on while you listen...there's lots of possibilities, and you rule out the other ones first.

(For example I have horribly wrong versions of most mainstream songs from the late 80s/early 90s, but that's because I heard them on the tiny, crappy speaker of the school bus.)

It can be deflating to realize a song you liked listening to has lyrics that drag it down. But sometimes there’s still enough there that I file it away under “guilty pleasures”. This has got me thinking of the “Ya Nona” skit from A Black Lady Sketch Show:

Honestly hearing lyrics different gave us so much and there's nothing better than fully embracing it. IT's been over 15 years and I still can't get the misheard Wishmaster out of my head, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Not to mention awful mixing and singers just not enunciating words right.

Like, my god, people in the mixing booth, tell them to sing it again for fucks sakes.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I am the polar opposite of this. Lyrics are a huge part of my enjoyment of a song, and I can't really imagine having a song I really enjoyed and not having the lyrics memorized.

If I find the lyrics offensive or full-on stupid, then I usually won't like the song. But honestly I don't think that many lyrics are full-on stupid. Most often, with Top 40 stuff, the lyrics are just very basic, and that can be fine, as long as they work well with the music and the singer's vocal delivery.

Alternatively (pun intended), if we go outside the mainstream core a little, there are so many incredible lyrics out there. Not that Top 40 stuff can't be artistically strong. It definitely can be. It just frequently isn't, IMO, because that's often not what it was created to be in the first place.

I thought that Kesha song went "I'm a motherfuckin' bullet!" and was disappointed when it turned out to be "I'm a motherfuckin' woman!"

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's one of the best things about listening to things in a different language. You don't have to stop and roll your eyes at stupid lines or skip the song altogether because some line just ruined it for you.

I literally don't like songs without knowing the lyrics. I've still got a good repertoire of songs i like, but like with most media, I approach each song in the context of genre conventions/tropes (so I mostly like songs that work against, but sometimes if the beat is good, I can forgive boy and girl band songs because they're supposed to be dumb). But I forgive a lot of dumb shit for clever lyrics.
