Same, tbh. Literally had a male cashier at whole foods try to gatekeep me over the star wars shirt I was wearing the other day. I'm at least 3 decades older than him, saw the OG in '77, and I am not here for Pizzaface VonFromunda giving me shit about a goddamn kylo ren shirt. I told him straight up to take his unwashed balls back to /b/ and quit being a gatekeeping little bitch.

Please please tell me you used those exact words.

What happened afterwards? I'd love for this story to not be fake because I have problems with asserting myself in public when people are rude.

hahaha good on ya and I'm not even that into Star Wars

I feel this. Back in the early days of Pokemon Go I ran into multiple male players who just couldn't wait to lecture me on which pokemon evolved into what and I was just sitting there like 'I have played every main pokemon game since the original red and blue, I don't need you to mansplain me what a pidgey evolves into thanks.'

Haha, that's awesome!

I had a guy at my workplace try to mansplain X-Men to me when I complimented him on his t-shirt. Dude, I've been reading X-Men since before you were born, don't try to one-up me about how you know so much more about X-Men than the characters they put in the movies. He backed off.

I agree, unless I know the reviewer or his work very well and know he's not a misogynist. Some rando, yeah, odds are...

I hear you. I have tons of criticisms of all of those properties but it's usually for the exact opposite of why dudes have problems with them.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Same! And I'm glad I'm not the only one! This is also what makes me skeptical of following critics that are guys (especially because I mostly follow game reviewers). It's unfair, but it's better than to stumble by an unpleasant review.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Too often when it's a man criticizing something... they've missed the point of the entire thing.

I know this is the case with Captain Marvel. I've also seen it with Star Wars, Fight Club, Captain America, Lord of the Rings, etc and so on and so forth. It's depressing.

I really hate the ones that assume every single property is made for the 18 to 24 year old white male, as if they are the only ones that actually matter. No. Not sorry. 50% or more of the population is female. America is much browner than you think. (I don't have the statistic to hand.) Get over it.

I was in Breaking Bad fandom and it was FILLED with those dudes.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Just two words: Fight Club.

All those dudes who thought Walt was a hero.....

(Anonymous) 2021-07-18 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)

I recently read a woman's review of a game I liked and it floored me. She spoke about the misogyny in the game, how it framed women and restrained them into a role, and how it felt playing as a female character (controlled by a woman) in such a narrative. I knew the game had misogynistic dialogue and we could all frown and tut at those characters who spewed it, but all the other shit completely flew past me. Now that it's been pointed out to me though I realize how fleetingly I thought about any of those choices around women the game had made. It's like re-reading a book and realizing the entire middle pages were stuck together and you hadn't read them, but now your pulling them apart and finally looking at them closer than the rest of the story. I guess men are just subconsciously intent on overlooking some things. It fucks me up because I remember having a single thought about something she pointed out and then glossing over it and focusing on another part of the story. My review of that game would have definitely been annoying to that reviewer for sure, so I understand this secret.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Care to share the link of the review/which game this was?

Not that I'd play it, but I love hearing different perspectives -- very much like you said. If you're not...aware or conscious of certain issues (sensitive to things) then they'll just fly right over your radar. And then suddenly, there's someone else seeing the same thing but experiencing something different!

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 12:22 am (UTC)(link)

I read it here on dw. https://batman.dreamwidth.org/101192.html (https://batman.dreamwidth.org/101192.html) It was about Pillars of Eternity. The part about Waidwen's Legacy & the gender disparity.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Whenever I read a review like that and feel like I missed all those horrible things, I find that when I go back to the source material, I hadn't missed much and the reviewer was just reading and projecting way too many personal issues onto the text.

I feel a little weird about it, but I agree with you. I'm just not interested in a guy's take on the Thirteenth Doctor because so many dudes were just screaming about how wrong it was for the Doctor to be played by a woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
This is similar to my interest in white creators who create things with BIPOC. I was so into the guys who wrote "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" but then they churned out "Cobra Kai" and my Asian heart was broken at their failings there. Quentin Tarantino proved a long ass time ago that he's just a self-centered edgelord who really thinks his racism is "woke" and "not racism".

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
AS a man, I'm not interested in hearing men critique these things, tbh. Cis guys don't have the perspective.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of feel this. I mean, there are exceptions. I will listen to Chris Stuckmann review anything, because I trust him as a reviewer. I don't always agree with him 100%, but I've also never felt burned by him, either. I'll listen to Folding Ideas talk about any piece of media because not only do I trust him but I fully believe he is smarter than me.

But there are definitely certain properties for which I avoid watching/listening to the vast majority of men's opinions.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-19 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
What I hate is how a lot of dudes "criticism" of things leads to all criticism for a thing being invalidated. Like it's impossible to rightfully criticise TLJ without a mass of people accusing you of being a sexist assholes dudebro just on principle without ever registering what you actually say.

I know what you mean, but there has been so much batshit in Doctor Who fandom over the course of its history, I think if you applied that standard you couldn't listen to anyone.

Mind you, I have to admit to a knee-jerk suspicion of men having a go at Thirteen, even though I would admit the writing has been generally less than stellar on her run, and I hate the Timeless Child stuff with the heat of a thousand suns.
