Well, how public is public? Like, is it public if you tell your friend about it?

My questions are, 1. How traumatic was the thing you're borrowing for your story? 2. How much detail from the real event are you including? and 3. How public did this person voluntarily make their experience?

Whether or not one is being insensitive in appropriating someone else's experience for their story depends heavily on the answers to those question, IMO.
