Sometimes I wonder when fic writers who write popular m/m ships and genderbend one character to be always female! are secretly homophobic.

Especially when it doesn't change much in terms of character interaction, just the sex parts. What is even the point?? Even stories that do it to make a certain plot point or highlight gender disparities make me side-eye the writer.

Conversely, writers who write m/m ships and distinctly make one or both characters pointedly always gay! despite both of them having had meaningful straight relationships in canon make me think they're biphobic.

How often does only one character in a pair get genderbent?

Sorry, not dissing you or your experiences, it's just that most of the genderbends I see they both switch.

Or that orig-flavour Man From U.N.C.L.E fic where Napoleon Solo was female and lesbian, so *still* cut a swath through her female co-workers while being platonic besties with Illya.

Do you- do you have a link to the MFU fic by any chance? It is very relevant to my interests...

When the Hobbit movies first came out I remember I saw a good bit of fem!Bilbo x still male Thorin. Don't recall seeing any fem!Thorin with still male Bilbo, though there may well have been some and I just somehow missed it all. I chalked it up to the writers projecting onto Bilbo as wish fulfilment for their crush on Thorin and moved on

I find these particularly odd since female hobbits don't seem to do much.

I think that's part of the reason why it does happen, tbh. The Hobbit/LotR is such a sausage-fest that if you want much of female anything you're either going to be gender-swapping or creating OCs. And yeah, even if you use one of the named canon women you're basically creating an OC unless it's Galadriel or Eowyn. I've seen enough not porny female!Bilbo Hobbit fic and art that some of it has to be chalked up to wanting some women in the mix and Bilbo being easiest one to swap.

AYRT

Ah, right - I was never into Bilbo/Thorin so all of that went over my head. Thanks for the example. :-)

It's oddly common in the fandom I'm in. Don't want to name it but still... It's strangely popular somehow.
