A lot of stories are inspired by or based on real events, characters based on real people but sometimes it comes off as exploitative. In creative writing classes, some of my professors jokingly said stuff like "Be careful what you say around writers or you'll end up in their stories!" or that it's fair game taking other people's experiences and incorporating them into your work. I don't think I'd rip people's experiences off without changing enough that it felt original.
