On the one hand, I hope writing/reading that type of fic makes people happy. On the other hand... yeah, it's a bit cringe and I'd never read any.

I haven't read much GO fic so I don't have any opinions on that, but to me Outsider Fic needs to be a real Outsider. A neighbor, a waitress, an extremely knowledgeable cabbage merchant, someone who doesn't grasp the whole of the weird that's going on but notices a tiny bit during their day. That's what works for me. A new person who gets brought into the story and doted on by the characters is completely different.

Oooh yeah. One of my favorite FF7 fics back in the day was about a bunch of teenagers in the slums of Midgar, and... well, materia was just sort of sold in the shops there like it was totally normal, but you don't see everyone in the slums running around casting spells. So why would normal, non-fighters be interested enough in buying it that people would sell it? Fic answered that question in the form of a rather dark slice-of-life story that only mentioned a couple of the named characters in passing.

oh man, I sorta get this because I'm so picky about how outside outsider fic should be for me to enjoy and no cringe. I'm much more "yes adopt the OC" when it's found family, but I at all times want it to fit within the universe set by canon, and wish fulfillment almost never does this well.

- Anthony J. Crowley, Retired Demon and Airbnb Superhost by TheOldAquarian (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21723022) - Exactly what it sounds like, just Airbnb reviews when Crowley decides to Airbnb his flat post-canon

- 5 Conversations Overheard in an English Village by chellefic (https://archiveofourown.org/works/20099053) - A village vicar is very weirded out by A&C

- Adventures In Attempting To Purchase A Book From That Weird Old Soho Bookshop, A. Z. Fell & Co. by Quandtuniverse (https://archiveofourown.org/works/19315309) - An antique book forum is very aggressively trying to buy books from Aziraphale. Also has a bunch of related works you can read if you like.

- Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach by Nnm (https://archiveofourown.org/works/20177950) - Ok, this one's a long fic, almost 100k, and definitely not to everyone's taste but I love it. Essentially, Crowley gets a therapist. It's super well-researched, but also pretty heavy due to all the trauma recovery going on.

TBH, I find basically every form of self-insert in fanfic to be entirely repulsive to my personal tastes. So yeah, I very much feel this.

But also, like you, I keep my hatred of anything self-insert-y to myself (and F!S), because people who love self-insert stuff in fanfic aren't doing anything wrong.

I've seen a few of these, and (speaking as a queer person) ia that they're terrible. I don't ever say anything to the writers or whatever, because I'm not that much of a jerk, but these fics would probably be marginally less terrible if the OCs had ANY smidge of personality beyond "poor suffering persecuted life support system for An Gender or An Sexuality (I'd say the ratio of An Gender to An Sexuality is about 3/2 give or take from what I've seen.) But they never have any personality beyond that, or if they start out with some it immediately flies out the window as soon as The Gender is revealed.
