Given the choice between that and the trend of filming scenes with such poor lighting that everything looks like layers of dark blobs, I’ll take the unrealistic scenes that I can see.

This. One of my biggest pet peeves with modern horror/suspense films is that it's hard to be scared when I can't see ANYTHING.

Yeah like... cool so there were tons of spooky scenes to amp up the suspense in which ghosts/monsters were just lurking around in the background without the characters noticing them? Well, neither did I!

Absolutely this. Tired of shows and movies that look like someone put a cap over the camera lens. If the people involved want me to actually know or care about what's happening, they have to let me see it. Get good technical crew that know how to "light" a "dark" scene properly.
