Everything tends to feel very inert and fakey to me, and the lighting is definitely a big part of that (though certainly not the only part). Though to my understanding, it wasn't the filmmakers' faults that the lighting was so unnatural in older films; they just literally couldn't film in darkness or even dim natural light and still achieve any kind of usable footage because the technology wasn't capable of it yet. At least, that's what the key grip on ICE told me.
