this is decidedly not accurate in fandoms where's there's a popular m/m ship, and in my experience it's not true at all in the fandoms i've been in, but you know what? you got me hoping if there is a discourse it leads to more sophos/gen and irene/helen to "fix" it. i love the canon ships but if fandom is good for anything it's gay ships not in canon.
