The upside was that I didn't have to pay anything back. In London (UK) most of the libraries had decided to suspend fines during covid since it was impossible to return anything without putting the librarians in danger (since very early on there wasn't much known about the full extent of the virus and everyone was wary about what other people had touched). So throughout 2020 and up until this month, everyone could hold onto the books without worry.
