What's wrong with having a handheld console that will allow people to play games that will never get ported to the switch?

Nintendo have a monopoly right now and you'd rather hope that this thing crashes and burns?

I always wait until I can get a game or console on the secondary market. The people who rush out and spend way too much then will sell stuff for pennies on the dollar. IDGAF if I play the latest game as long as I have something fun to play. I have my eye on the steam player as well but I am not paying retail.

The steam deck is a funny little thing. It'd be a considered purchase for someone like me. I don't own many steam games and I'm not an early adopter. I sometimes wait years before buying a console. So I'm relying on the early adopters to help me decide on this thing.

One of them will be a good friend of mine who is involved in game journalism and he ended up pre-ordering an hour or so after it was announced. (After spaming the group discord with a bunch of memes about how it looks). ​

The way he sees it is he can afford the loss if it ends up under-performing, it'll be a collectors piece no matter what and if it actually delivers on what it's promising then he has over 400 steam games in his library and will have Youtube content either way.

I need it to do ok. I'm a PC gamer, i spent a lot of money on my rig and i have a lot of good friends who i used to regularly play with.
And since the pandemic hit i've been sitting in front of my PC for 9 hours a day writing emails and taking zoom calls. And it's had a detrimental effect on me.

I can't bring myself to sit at that desk past my working hours. It's no longer my little gaming room anymore, it's turned into an office and whenever i attempt to use it as anything else i revert back to my work self.
I haven't been able to keep in touch with friends and i desperately miss that.

If the deck does ok i can sit downstairs after work and play and argue with them all again.

I'm also skeptical, but as someone who is capable of modifications, I feel pressured to invest in the first wave of the devices since those are always the best to mod.

One thing I hope for is that this makes all the games I have that are obvious mobile ports a lot easier to play. Please Square-Enix, why do you hurt me. If not, it's easy enough to trick it out to be an emulation machine.

I spent years trying to make the Steam controller work with a number of games because I preferred holding it over an XBOX controller. A couple months ago I finally broke down and bought myself a new XBOX controller for my PC games and it's refreshing to be able to sit down and play through a game without having to jump through the hoops to make the controller work.

Early adopters are generally the ones that make or break a console, as well as figure out the bugs, so later iterations- if any- are relatively 'fixed' by the time I get around to buying one.

Writing advice -1st person

I have a story idea I've decided would be well suited to a first person narrator. But I am aware that a lot of people dislike first person POV. What traits should my narrator/ protagonist or their narration style have to make the first person narration less unpleasant?
