Nomura's design process in FF8: The graphics department told me that fur is extremely difficult to code. Time to design my characters with fur jackets.

Nomura's design process in FFX: Fur is still difficult to code, but doable. That's not good enough. I need to torture the graphics department even further by making a dress made out of fur and belts.

The graphics department: (just obscures Lulu's dress most of the time in cutscenes)

I mean, most animators/designers aim to push the tech as far as it can go. The Incredibles' director's commentary is full of stuff like that.
