I have not seen the show, so no idea how accurate it is to the book- though I understand, it's reasonably so- but it's not as obvious in some parts of the book.

So it's understandable if people don't pick up on it. Many aren't actively looking for it, honestly. And there are so many ways that particular line could be interpted too- platonic or romantic being a couple.
