Honestly, I get into most of my new fandoms through fic first. I end up reading stuff by authors I trust to always be great, usually completely spoiling everything for myself in the process, then go read the original work once I feel it. I got into MXTX like this, most recently, but tbh this is how I've found fandoms since like 2010.

Yes. This.

Lol same. It almost feels like reading original fiction but without the world building and primarily relationship based.

I just go by favourite tropes and if I like the fic then I'll look into the actual fandom. Found some pretty cool stuff that way.

OP

It's essentially this for me. If there's a character I'm interested in (i.e. they're the hot villain), then i go looking for a pairing that I'd like, check for some tropes i might be in the mood for and off we go lol.

Sometimes I'll actually end up going to check out the source material (i.e. an anime, show, or movie) but most times, between all the fic I've read, I get a pretty decent read on the character AND the story/world.

I spoil my self for everything, and I also follow authors to new fandoms, so I also do this. And with MCU fic nowadays it's a given since so many authors cross with the comics, including characters who haven't been introduced in movies yet (MCU fic has a lot of at least slightly OOC characters, so I don't feel like this changes anything lmao)

To each their own. I can't get into fic without knowing the canon well. I don't even like reading fic until I'm caught up with the canon. It's just that I feel like I won't understand otherwise.

Same here. I only read fic for canons I like or enjoyed, I genuinely cannot and do not understand reading fic for something I don't have at least a little emotional investment in, none of it will make sense if I don't know wtf is going on or who the characters are.

Yeah, right. I usually check out fic if there's an arc that I want to see explored in greater detail. Usually ship fic comes later.

Thank you secret maker!
