Yeah, the more tropey something is, the less I care if it's unrealistic if it's useful in the narrative. also coughing up blood to indicate spiritual distress is just *chef's kiss* to me. at that point, it's just realistic.

Yeah it's silly but it fits the genre, it's not like most Wuxia/Xiania shows are particularity rooted in reality as it is.

Same here tbh. And if I do watch/read/get into something new, my interest fades a lot more quickly than it used to and I'm right back with my old faves.

These past few years it might be a comfort thing though? Because reality has gotten difficult enough I don't have the (emotional) bandwidth for a lot of new fictional things. That sounds silly, but I think it might be (partly) the reason.

I do this, too, for the most part. Some of us are just creatures of habit, I guess. And things that bring you joy bring you joy.

I 70% agree. There are still stories and things that I like and find novel. But there's definitely a huge swath of things, which is much larger than it was when I was a kid, where I just feel like I've seen it all before and it's not interesting or worth my time. It's much, much, much more difficult to find things that are still interesting.

That's where characters come in. Even if I can predict plots, I can still be drawn in by well-written, well-acted characters. The older I get, the more I'm interested in the characters. If I don't like any of them, I will stop watching a movie or TV show after an ep or two.

i sorta understand what you're saying. even my mom has gotten better at predicting plots. bingeing media has especially made it quicker to get bores of something. but...sometimes I'm surprised and I would go through a lot of the repetitive stuff, to get that little pleasure of something hitting different.

that said, have you tried a different culture's media or lit? sometimes they don't have the same tropes and the same tropes don't have the exact same impact.

That's how I feel about manga. But when you do find things that manage to buck tropes and stay refreshingly original, it makes for an even better read because in some ways, you end up appreciating it more.

Let me correct your secret for you:

'Colin Firth doesn't do it for me, whereas Matthew McFadyen does.'

There's no way Colin Firth can be described as a turd, he's a beautiful man. That's not even like a closely held passion of mine, just objective observation.

For me Firth's intensity is what makes him the ultimate Darcy for me. Also, imo, Macfayden is not at all attractive, so there's also that.

I remember the series, but I don’t remember what was in this specific book. Anything particularly messed-up?

(I remember one book in the series ended with a story about a boy who murders and cannibalizes his classmates. Coville’s introductory blurb said “This one is just sick.”)

Honestly, I get into most of my new fandoms through fic first. I end up reading stuff by authors I trust to always be great, usually completely spoiling everything for myself in the process, then go read the original work once I feel it. I got into MXTX like this, most recently, but tbh this is how I've found fandoms since like 2010.

I'm against rl politics in fandom, sports and sci-fi media I consume. My fics that seriously comment on the Cold World or the realities of interactional borders me arms laws are just no fun.

I've been to US exactly once, I don't care about blm or about criticism someone has about some aspect of this movement on some fanart site.

Also... You know how corporations use lgbt images in Liberal countries only, so they don't lose profits in Muslim countries, for example? So I don't give a shit about DA's posts on blm. It's not genuine. They replies to them could be genuine, troll or assholes being assholes online. Who cares, man.
