I think being British fits Edgeworth because his design screams "British stereotype." I mean, he has a cravat for goodness' sake, you can't expect people to just ignore that. It's not Anglophilia, it's... stereotyping, almost mockery (although of the affectionate type). Idk I think you're looking too deeply into it and making a bunch of bad faith assumptions about people who were just having fun.

In the Japanese version, Edgeworth and the Von Karmas were written as having spent some of their lives in America, in order to seem somewhat glamorously foreign but not too foreign. The English version, which now takes place in California, changed it to Europe in order to keep it foreign. You're literally mocking fans for expanding on the material they were given. I think you need to calm down a little.

My opinion was with the localization material in mind, with young Edgeworth being raised with the Von Karmas in Germany. I have no doubt that people headcanoned Edgeworth as British were having fun with it, but also? It doesn't make a lot of sense, but they were still serious at the same time. I found the headcanons where Edgeworth took on Germanic habits believable, because the Von Karmas were a German family living in Germany. The stuff where Edgeworth is all of a sudden English for no good reason? I didn't care much for it. This also came during a time when the Migratory Slash Fandom was raving mad about anything on the BBC regardless of its quality (ahem, Moffat), so I felt like people were trying to fit a round block into a square hole.

I also never felt like cravats are quintessentially English things. Plenty of other European countries, such as Germany, wore them at one point in time.

Essentially: Drink your tea, Edgeworth.
