That's where characters come in. Even if I can predict plots, I can still be drawn in by well-written, well-acted characters. The older I get, the more I'm interested in the characters. If I don't like any of them, I will stop watching a movie or TV show after an ep or two.

This. I mean, yeah, I guess if your only interest in a story is how the plot is ultimately going to go, then it would be boring. But stories are about so much more than that - the characters and their relationships, how the plot gets to that final destination, things like that.

characters and construction: in a book, good writing. in a tv show, excellent use of cinematography and writing/dialogue/pacing. a good edit/pacing and good music in a movie. but yes the characters first, because good editing and camerawork won't save shitty characters.

Agree anon. I've noticed that as I get older my tolerance for weak characterisation is going way down, especially if they're involved in a plot that isn't doing anything special.

Equally, a bog-standard plot can be saved by something that comes across as a genuine fresh eye. But "blah" characters definitely ruin things more for me.

Characters who exist solely to make the plot function a specific rigid way as well...I'm a bit bored of those.

Totally agree.
