115 OP

Or, here's a thought, maybe I interpret the movie differently from you? Maybe I view it from the angle of being sick of, if Disney has a female character, she MUST invariably end up paired with a male character to be happy? Maybe I'm tired of that and think it's an especially blatant cop-out in Belle's case?

Nah. Must be that I have a warped view of marriage.

What is so wrong with getting married? I don't understand why people like you think I have to be single in order to be truly empowered? I think the idea of marriage as being "tied down to a man" is warped and outdated. I agree with you that maybe Disney should make a movie with a woman who doesn't end up with a man for once, but really, given the fairy tale model they're working with, what did you expect?

Well, I think Disney made all the movies with girls falling in love with a prince of some sort because, well, that's what a lot of the audience liked.

I'll admit that I'm a romantic at heart, and I really like it in stories when a woman/man falls in love. >.> I don't like it as much now, but when I was a kid, I always loved it. To this day, Beauty and the Beast is still my all-time favorite movie, and the part where Belle tells the Beast that she loves him still makes me go, "Awwwwwwwwwwww..."

It wasn't like Belle mindlessly fell in love with the Beast. She was forced to live with him, and it wasn't like she wanted to fall in love with him. After spending so much time with him, though, she saw his true personality and gradually came to love him. This wasn't like the Little Mermaid or whatever when Ariel saw Eric and immediately decided to pretty much abandon her life to be with the guy she didn't even know. I don't think this was a case of Stockholm Syndrome either (lol). Although that would be amusing and kind of disturbing to think about.

I can see where the OP is coming from, but Belle was still able to maintain her personality while falling in love with the Beast. I don't think she'd be tied down to him either - The Beast loved her enough to let her see her father, and I think he would love her enough to continue doing what she loves in life, like adventuring and stuff. Besides, now that she's married to a rich prince, she has the money to travel. >.>

And the fact that he's not Gaston, who expected her to churn out a bunch of kids for her life, I think implies that she could still have adventures. In fact, now she's probably got the money for them--and after being trapped in a castle for years, Beast would probably be happy to leave it too. His respecting the things she wanted and loved was part of what made her love him--thus the whole "I give you a library because books are the things you love best" scene.

B&B is pretty much about finding love, so if anything it's the "I want adventure" that's tacked on to the story. For an adventure story they'd really have to start with something else.

Ah yes, that's a good point. Gaston did play a prominent role in the movie, not just as the villain, but as showing why Belle worked so much better with the Beast. This showed that Belle didn't want to fall in love and settle down with any guy, but the one who would let her continue doing what she loved. It was clear that Gaston would make Belle abandon her books and her hopes and dreams of adventuring. If that was the case with the Beast, then Belle wouldn't have fallen in love with him. But, like you said, when the Beast presented her with the library, this showed that the Beast really did care about what Belle wanted. At first he just wanted to be with her to break the curse, but he grew to love her for what she was, unlike Gaston, who just wanted a token wife.

In the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast (I think this may be in the DVD version of BatB too, although I'm not sure), Belle tells the Beast, "You and I are alike. Where I come from, people think I'm odd." The Beast doesn't care that she's "odd", and lets her be who she is, so I really don't think she'd be tied down to a castle with him. That's one of the reasons she loved him. With him she could have the life of adventure that she truly wanted.

Beauty and the Beast + Stockholm Syndrome = hilarious and fascinating.
