I know, right? But I'm pretty sure that enough people did it before Applegate, if only in passing rather than as the central point of the plot, that plagiarism is a too hard to prove.

You know, my recollections of Animorphs aren't exactly rosy-colored. Pretending that the last half of the final book does not exist helps a lot with that, but even without it the series had some problems. Still, for young adult fiction it was damn intelligent. If only hordes of teenage girls were idolizing and attempting to emulate Cassie rather than Bella.

Yeah, I'm sure someone else did it first, but it's something about the methodology of Meyer. The complete removal of free will and identity stealing is, I think, what bothers me the most, as those are the parts that remind me most of Yeerks.

Oh, and I agree about the series' quality; I'm actually passingly confident that much of the last half of the series was ghostwritten, because a lot of it doesn't make sense and the ending still disappoints me when I think about it. It's definitely not a pillar of modern lit, but for a YA series, it wasn't bad. I always loved Tobias the most. And when I think about it, there's a lot of dark themes in those books that I didn't get back then.

You know, Tobias/Rachel is sort of what Cleolinda likes to say Edward/Bella should have been: two characters who are quite openly completely messed up in the head, but messed up in such miraculously complementary ways that the only person who could ever have fallen in love with the one is the other Although in this case the girl is the sparkly cold-blooded killer.

I remember actually thinking at the time that the Animorphs was a REALLY dark series for the age group it was aimed at. In fact, I'd read plenty of my parent's books at that time, and I found the Animorphs series compelling precisely because it pulled less punches than (most of) the adult novels I'd read.

I was sort of amazed that Applegate got away with writing books for kids that had, by the end of the first book, a kid trapped forever (or at least several books) as a hawk and a whole group of kids who'd witnessed an alien getting tortured to death. (Unless I'm remembering something really wrong.) Then you throw in stuff like the masses of humans and other aliens being mentally enslaved, the family members being compromised, the acts of war and the cannibalism, and just what the kids go through when they morph... Yeah.

But then, considering that this crap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goosebumps) got published too, eh.

Oh sorry, forgot to add - if you check Wikipedia, it says that nearly everything after #26 was ghostwritten.
