Sorry for my rambling comment
The scene where Young!Ben meets Richard always reminded me of a fairy tale: the child runs away from home, gets lost in the forest before encountering the charming, otherworldly stranger, and begs to be taken away from his horrible life. Maybe Ben even thought/hoped that the vision of his mother had drawn him to the jungle to meet someone that would rescue him from his father because she couldn't. (That would definitely feed his belief that the island is a miraculous place.)
Not to mention that, all this time, Richard was keeping an eye on Locke and testing him to see if he was their true leader. And, what were Widmore and Eloise up to during those years?
Honestly, why can't I find fic about this? Am I looking in the wrong places? (Something else I'd love to see tackled in a fanfic: Ben introducing Annie to Richard and the Hostiles. I have a feeling they never met in canon, but that's why we have fanfic!)

Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, said much the same thing about that scene - that it's an ancient sort of story or symbolism. I have this idea in my head that maybe Ben fantasized Richard was his real dad who was going to take him to his real family, in that "other parents" sort of way. The fact he never ages just warps that into seeming more true, that he's some kind of savior.
I think they go through "leaders" on a regular basis, like a king or Dalai Lama. So it wasn't so much is Locke their true leader as much as it was, is he their next leader. Richard said something about choosing leaders from an early age, which makes me wonder if he had been grooming Ben since he was young.
My thoughts exactly, man. I've found maybe two fics with them? And neither really touched on that dynamic, which was a shame.
