115. On one hand, I can see where everyone else is coming from. Marriage =/= end of life, etc etc. But at the same time, there's an implication in "happy = paired off" that I'm not pleased with. The adventure doesn't end after you fall in love (if anything, that's when a new one starts, thank you very muchly), but you'd never know that to look at Disney movies. And yes, while nothing explicitly shows Belle ending up in a typical happily-ever arrangement, nothing shows that she doesn't either. With all the other examples Disney's given us showing that a guy is all a girl is supposed to need, I find it reasonable to doubt that they gave her something better. :( At the end, I always mentally add a voice-over of Belle saying something about dragons in the mountains while the Beast has a very "D: Oh no, here we go again" sound to his groan. It helps.

I'd like to see a Disney Princess where the pairing-up ending isn't quite perfectly finished. Sure. let them fall in love. Even imply that they'll get married one day. But this whole "story's ended, she's married, nothing interesting here anymore!" is a cop-out. (Mulan did it right <3) LOL, Hell, I'd like to see a Disney movie start with the marriage, and then have the adventure. A Disney sequel that doesn't suck would work too. (Yeah, ask for the moon on a diamond chain, right?)

130. Stylistically, it does look a bit off when she's the only one not in a gown, but adding the rest of the Disney heroines would fix that. :\ If, you know, Disney weren't busily ignoring 90% of the Princesses that don't bow themselves out of the plot just in time to be rescued. I think Disney just needs to give its Princesses a good once-over. Four/Six of those pictured were only a little better than Plot Coupons for gods' sakes. I love my Princesses, but really Disney. :|

(Also, why can I never find anything Aurora-themed in the blue dress?)

146. I was not-so secretly rooting for the impossible Harry/Draco lol. I thought it was pretty obvious that things would end up with Harry and Ginny, and that's partly what bothered me. Rather than spend half the time developing it that she did with Ron/Hermione, she changed Ginny so Harry would like her. Including having her date other guys so Harry would notice that she's not pining after him anymore. How sophomoric and stupid is that? It just mad me mad, honestly—Ginny deserved better. The way they got together seemed horrifically rushed and unbelievable, and we were never really given any idea of why they loved each other. Add in the vaguely creepy echoes back to James/Lily and you kind of have a recipe for shipping disaster. TBH, it seems like she did this with every couple except Ron/Hermione, which happen to be the ones that she really spent time building up. I think this proves something.

There's a reason my personal canon ends half way through book 5.

115. ...I will admit that I really liked the Lion King sequel. The first one, anyway.

ALSO as for the whole Disney 'a guy is all a girl is supposed to need' thing, I can definitely see where you're coming from (sob Cinderella), but I think that the reason B&B is A++ is because it works vice-versa, too. Belle didn't actually need a man, as evidenced by her denial of Gaston (though falling in love was a nice side benefit), but Beast did. He definitely needed Belle to tell him to stfu and stfd, and he seemed purely delighted when she began to like him. In the end, the point wasn't that Belle had a guy. It's that she had a guy who respected her, not to mention an entire castle full of friends who understood her.

130. I think that Disney's actually doing a bit better with that, actually. I'm really excited to see what they do with their two new princesses. Hopefully they will be completely badass.

...as cynical as this sounds, I'm pretty sure that Disney only hypes up the typical princesses because they can sell a lot more merchandise that way. I know most parents would prefer to buy their little girl a ball gown over the relatively skimpy things Jasmine and Pocahontas wore. (I-I know my parents were like that, at least. In the end, I got the pirate outfit. Hells yes.) Notice how they put Ariel in a gown, too. No parent is gonna buy clam shell bras for their children! And I think that most would be relatively uncomfortable with buying Barbies and stuff like that, too. :/

tl;dr I'm a disney dork and I could no longer prevent myself from replying to at least one comment. I actually agree with most things you said.

The Lion King sequel wasn't bad. A bit heavy on the Aesop, but it is Disney lol.

I love B&B. :D My only major disappointment was in the ending, and even that wasn't even a giant disappointment. I wanted it to be explicitly shown that this relationship wouldn't fall back into the Disney Pattern. Alas, we're left to assume. Which is better than simply being shown that Belle did the "settle down and become vacuous and useless" routine, but I had hopes. ^^;;

130. Yeah. *sigh* Which sucks, but good things done for bad reasons are still good things. Let's hope the trend keeps up until it's just the way things are, rather than any reason being needed at all.

<3 I went as a Jasmine for Halloween as a little girl. Of course, my dad complained, but he would have complained if I'd gone as Yeti. >> At least Ariel's gown is sort of canonical--it's usually just the pink one (who put a redhead in pink? This redhead protests). I don't think Pocahontas even had one.

I'm sorry, but are you spoiling for a fight, or am I imagining the hostility?

I think Ginny, as a character, got short-changed. I don't recall any hints that she was "feisty" prior to the last few books. She was shy, mousy and a background character with the idol-type crush on Harry that was rather cute. That's not to say I disliked her. Nor did I dislike new!Ginny. What I disliked was the sudden and inexplicable transition from none extreme (shy) to the other (feisty), with the only given explanation being that she was showing Harry that she's over him (as per Hermione's suggestion). To me, it carried heavy over-tones that she needed to change to catch his attention. I feel like her other boyfriends were similar devices--Ginny may have cared for them, but rather than natural parts of character development and perhaps allowing her to actually be shown moving on from Harry (thus not letting her shyness overwhelm her and allowing the "feisty girl" we're supposed to believe is under it shine), I feel like JKR treated them as stepping stones. They deserved better too.

As to "rushed", in book-terms it was very rushed. Harry went from not noticing her even as a background character to the infamous chest-monster within a half a book? Considering everything else that was crammed into the series, I would have thought JKR could find time to mention that Ron's little sister is doing X this weekend, or that Harry thinks robe looks good on her. Instead, it's very much as though she were simply slapped into the book because Harry Needed a Girlfriend. He's the main character, but what should have been a major character development (falling in love) was given a tenth of the time we got for the two major-minors.

Unfortunately, a lot of the female (and not a few male) characters were given similar treatments. Rowling had very specific ideas about what she wanted to do with various characters, and when the last few books loomed with no development in those directions, she took some very sloppy short cuts. Of course, if she hadn't we'd be staring down the face of book 8 right now (for non-pairing purposes, seeing as the Deathly Hallows came by way of similar short cuts), but that it was necessary to contain the series doesn't make it somehow not poor writing.

That the books weren't about shipping?

Perhaps that JKR should leave the romance on the cutting room floor next time. Or simply that the good romances are the ones she remembered to work on. Of course, the hero had to be paired off (please note sarcasm mode: it is on). I just wish she'd done it better, and that she'd not given Ginny the short end of the stick. Mt two cents. (shrug) Disagree all you like.
