Notable "fashion" modifications in media

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2021-07-27 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be great or the worst or even "that turned out better than I thought it would!"

What a Girl Wants: The dress daphne modifies turned out really well and I love the reveal.

I was 12 when that movie came out, and I wanted that dress so bad.

I'll be forever bitter but just how hideous they made the Captain America suit in the Avengers. Whose decision was that?!

https://i.redd.it/n2lmqim69pq21.jpg

Thankfully, that suit it the outlier. All the other ones are great (even the purposefully silly USO one).

eta: After seeing OP reply, I think I misunderstood the question.

So for a in-universe modification, I love the makeover scene in Princess Diaries. https://youtu.be/nUjlBP5gUrQ

I may still not understand the question. xD

haha, it's okay, I'm good with talking about fashion and makeovers in general. And you're right about the suit.

After seeing your response (with the before and after), I think I understand. Best I can think of is the dress from Bridesmaids. Granted, it is still pretty ugly after they fix it but not quite as bad.

Before.
After.

I appreciated Helen Tasker's transformation of her fussy, frilly black dress into the sleek little black dress in True Lies.

I though she looked great in the original dress but holy crap she's smoking after.

I've never been a fan of Vivian's Pretty Woman derby outfit. It just didn't feel vivacious like she was. The red dress though... fantastic!

I think I was expecting more of a My Fair Lady derby outfit I think and you're right it was very subdued. I think it works for the scene because I think it's one of the first times she's with his hoity-toity friends, so the shyness of dress makes sense, even if it doesn't fit her.

Honestly most makeovers are the worst for me because most often it is female characters and most often it is done because she wasn't pretty enough before to get the guy/do whatever she's supposed to do in the movie. And I just hate that as a plot point in general.

One thing I love is when female action characters are wearing a dress and need to fight, and they just modify their dress right there for practicality. That's always fun.

the tearaway skirt for kicking purposes is a real thrill for me. or like when they use the parts they've torn for away for rope-like purposes.

Selina Kyle's transformation/Catwoman's costume creation in Batman Returns.

That scene is pure gold, and the fact that it demands wanton suspension of disbelief to accept that she was able to make that suit in one night out of anything she had in her closet somehow only makes the scene better.

ayrt

Yes! I know you're right that that vinyl jacket that she pulls out could not have become the actual costume without, like, magic (though she did sort of reanimate because of, you know, cats, so maybe not so far-fetched), but part of me is all, yeah, maybe she had a Halloween costume (that she got, but never wore) and something less demure that a friend or her mother bought her that just sat in the back of her closet and she just combined it all with her boss sewing and craft skills.

I guess it's as believable as those stuffed animals actually going down her garbage disposal, lol. Michelle Pfeiffer really sells it tho.

I could believe one night from an experienced sewer if it weren't for all the hand stitching, but the main problem is that there just wouldn't be enough material in the jacket to cover her whole body, even in a skin-tight suit, even pieced together. She would have needed a trenchcoat.

Maria making the von Trapp children play clothes out of her curtains is an eternal joy to me.

Apparently the real Maria really did that! Clothes out of household fabric is so fun. You've also now reminded me of the iconic Gone with the Wind curtains.

I've never been one for dresses personally, but I have the world's biggest soft spot for the different outfits for Alice in Alice: Madness Returns.

how did you like the play? I've been thinking of watching a run-through and knowing there are outfits makes me want to do it more.

Re: Notable "fashion" modifications in media

I liked playing it - was a little disappointed with the ending, but I honestly love the design of everything and I think its worth it to look through it (a lot of the outfits are not optional in the game and are unlocked as an extra - but there are plenty of outfits in the game that are just as a amazing. It probably makes me sound shallow to go on about the outfits, but I'm just in love with the designs in this game even though its been years since I last played it).

Those outfits are GORGEOUS.

Except the meat suit, that one's just weird but the rest are *chef's kiss*
