155 - Thank you, it is so comforting to hear that someone else can view someone as being attractive without also being sexually attracted to them. Those are some people I would love to draw, but not sleep with. You are not obliged to want to hit anyone, you're attracted to who you're attracted to and that's that, regardless of if they've got a strong jawline or if instead they've got major bags under their eyes.

156 - Any subtext in any given show is unintentional and if you think they were really doing it, you're probably delusional. Slash is usually AU by it's very nature. In the show, their friendship was beautiful but purely platonic but hey, in no way does that doesn't mean you can't like the idea of them together romatically either! (I ship s/mc instead of k/s, but either ship, hell, any ship, you can like both their actual relationship in the show and the hypothetical relationship you see in fics, even if you know that only one is real)

Much of it, yes, but there are certainly works that play up the subtext, seriously or not--hell, the actors and writers involved in Picard/Q (in the Star Trek right after that) confirmed that they considered Q in love with and/or attracted to Picard.

Well, it does depend on the show. As far as TOS is concerned, it's a pretty old show and I don't think they would've been able to try and get away with intended gay subtext (although that famous shore leave quote does make me wonder).

Also, most of the "subtext" people tend to see is really just characters giving each other hugs because they previously thought they were dead or something.

Actually, I read once that TOS tried to do an ep with a gay couple but were shot down by the network, so it was downplayed to subtext.

156- Uh, are you saying that in Star Trek the subtext was unintentional, or in most shows? Because I have a list for you of genre shows in which the writers are totally in on it; Buffy & Angel, Smallville, SGA to name just a few.

I'm not saying subtext doesn't exist or isn't ever intentional. Subtext makes shows more exciting to watch. I'm always sort of reply to F!S posts in a hurry, I should've mentioned that depending on whatever you're dealing with, there are some pairings that are probably going to be completely out of the question and that in those cases, any subtext that's found is probably unintentional.

For one, I'm talking about extreme cases, like people trying to find proof for Wincest, or Batman/Joker. It might have to do with more controversial subjects(I mean, it's still going to be awhile for gay relationships to be a common thing on tv), but I think I'm mostly talking about people substituting their fantasies for what is actually going on in canon (for instance, two people who can't stand each other are obviously just in love with each other. Example: Harry/Draco, all "subtext" there is probably unintentional).

I don't think there's anything wrong with interpreting something like snark in a way that could suggest attraction (hell, most of my favourite ships aren't canon and god knows I've decided to watch some scenes and just chose to believe that there's something more going on in order to accomodate what I ship), but just because you ship something it doesn't mean you have to try and prove that it's actually going on in canon. We're allowed to have our own fanon.

...from the asexual contingent of the population. Some of us don't really feel any sexual desire period, and that's okay too. So regardless of whether you fall into the "these people are gorgeous but no lust" camp or the "no sexual desire period" camp, rest assured that it is completely OK either way.
