156. I have written essays on this. Not Star Trek, but the concept behind t'hy'la and how damaging it is for us not to have an equivalent that is commonly understood in our language (English) and culture (general Western society, primarily American). I collect places where it appears in fiction when I find them. It's sort of an intellectual quest of mine to continue to focus on it just because it's there. You're the second person I've ever seen talk about it without me bringing it up first (unless you're RennArcher. If so, hi Renn >.>). I'm glad there are more like me. <3

I'm not RennArcher, no. Don't even know her I'm afraid, not a big part of the Trek fandom even if I call myself a Trekker.

And the way I see it, the term t'hy'la could have a sexual component or it could not, depending entirely on the two people involved. It's in the definition of the word, but.... I don't think it's really compulsory. I think if they were both Vulcan, and maybe if Jim were female (depending on Pon Far's small print, it seems unlikely but who knows) and had no other partner they might see it as logical to do so every seven years but that's the only way I could see it in any kind of cannon.

But Jim is human and not really about logic and Spock isn't as separate from his emotions as he likes to pretend. So no go there.

And I prefer it without the sexual hint to it, because it seems to mean more then.

And western culture really is devoid of the concept behind it, the kind of grand friendship, the closeness behind it. In Dogma there were two characters that were platonic life partners and that's probably the closest we could get to it. Maybe asexual and aromantic if you want to sound clever. But it's just something you don't see and when you do nobody knows what to call it or how to react around it.

And in a way I wish we had more of it, friends/chosen-siblings/t'hy'la we could point at and say 'those two, they're totally married to each other, but in a very platonic way'. There's the starts of it, like shadows, in several shows I watch - Jack/Daniel in SG-1 and Doctor/Donna in Doctor Who but their friendships were never developed that far, to that strength like Kirk and Spock's.
