160) I think the problem here is you are running up against the private writing/public writing divide. Your crap fics with OCs that are you? We all write these. Well maybe write is too strong a word, we dream of them. Some of us go the extra step and write them down. Some don't bother.

This is private writing, designed with an audience of only us -- and it's great. We can hit exactly the emotional notes we need. Unfortunately, while they are highly enjoyable for us, they aren't enjoyable for anyone else. The character doesn't need to be developed, because she's already developed in our heads. Our plots don't need to be logical to appeal and we can get away with cheap unjustified emotional short cuts.

But once you move those fics into the public sphere by putting them up, they have to live up to a better standard. The truth is, those self-inserts really are very bland, emotionally overwrought, and utterly predictable -- because there is no effort put in them to be anything else. Good writing meant for other people is actual work.

So the upshot is, they are telling you the truth. Your true originality, what makes you uniquely you does not come through in your fics. Instead we get an idealized you, which is as cookie cutter as a barbie doll.

Am I supposed to not ship something just because it's not stated explicitly in canon? There's a lot of Azula/Ty Lee subtext and I enjoy it. I like reading it and I like writing it.
