Fandom, like most social things, tends to go in circles and cycles. It is what it is, OP, but I get your frustration.

ngl hearing someone go 'omg 4 whole years' in a community that's existed since 2007 made me lol

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm, according to Wikipedia Discord has been around since 2015, so what are you talking about?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--I would guess FS?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay... I still don't get what's funny about that.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you didn't understand the message you replied to

I think you didn't really get what they were saying. Like, OP has been in their current fandom for fifteen years, so they clearly know four years isn't a long time, and they're clearly not saying four years is a long time. They're just remarking at how fast time flies, that their fandom has been on Discord for four years already, the unspoken but obvious part being "It feels like it was yesterday we started there."

Boreanaz has one of those faces that invites a slap. It's a combination of the smug and the brow ridges.

That said, Angel's constant pity party on Buffy was exhausting. Angelus might have been a bit of a cartoon villain at times, but at least he had fun with it.

whoops, misfire!

It just becomes hard to find a fandom space. Reddit is full to the brim with unfunny memelords, dreamwidth doesn't have the fandoms I like nor the stuff I like to do, and like hell I'd touch Twitter with a 10 foot pole.

I just want to talk about theories, storytelling, and non-shipping fanfiction. But I'm learning that the bigger a fandom is, the worse it is. And even if it is small, they may focus on the wrong stuff.

I've had some good discussions in some of the subreddits for my fandoms, but yeah, I've also encountered the meme stuff a lot, too. Otherwise, I'm with you on most platforms nowadays. I like message boards, but those are becoming few and far between nowadays.

I'm at the point now where I just like to talk with a small handful of individual fans and leave it at that. It seems to work a lot more easily for me in terms of getting to actually talk about a variety of topics and not rehashing the same old debates over and over (or if we do discuss them, we can do so in a fresher, more respectful way). I just like being able to find my own little corner and hang out there, and stay out of the drama as much as I can.

I'm only still on Tumblr because of fandom stuff, but that's mainly seeing fanworks, memes and getting notifications for things happening - I don't really talk to anyone on there. I feel so sad about how far Deviantart has fallen in fandom spaces because I was most active on there before it eventually dwindled down to near nothing.
Discord sounds terrifying to me tbh - I don't think I could keep up with it.

Be the change you want to see! Discussion topics, icon competitions, fic challenges, rereads/watches...I was in an old and fairly quiet community and one of the mods suddenly started doing this and it was amazing what a difference it made actually talking about the canon.

I've recently gotten back into fandom circles and man, I feel this. One drama circle closes, and then another opens, then that ends and we somehow end back at the first. It's tiresome.
