I come at this from both sides. On the one hand, there are some fics I remember that I really wish were still online. But on the other hand, as an author, my early fics were terrible, and I'm glad they aren't online to embarrass me anymore. Not that anyone wants to read my old fics, because no one does. But I understand why better authors still want to remove their stuff.

So, while I wish those fics I remember were still online, ultimately I get why authors take fics away. Even orphaned, they are still online to make you feel embarrassed, and it is totally possible that it could be traced back to you somehow.

This is why you have to download every story you like.

I do this now. Some of the fics I miss have been gone too long, though, because they were from when I was a kid, and I didn't really save things on my computer back then. One of them, one of my favorite fics ever, I'd actually printed off at one point, but I lost the print off copy years ago in one move or another.

Yup. I was lucky enough to find a preserved copy of a fic from the Wayback machine, since it had only been a couple months since the author deleted it.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I've being doing this for the last 10 years in fandom and that's not even because of writers deleting their own works but things like LJ comms going down and fanfic websites being nuked. If I really like something I'll download it to keep for myself.

Yup, this. Started doing it with every story I loved because it happened to me in the past and you never know.

Well, I figure that if the author wants to try filing off the serial numbers and publishing or even just using stuff from their fanfic in original fic, then deleting it is probably best. It'd be awkward to publish something and then have people notice that there are lots of similarities to even an orphaned fanfic.

I think those authors should post notice that the fic will be going away and X number of days, so people have a chance to download it. Like make a second chapter or part that will pop up in notifications detailing what's going on.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds good, but on the other hand I'd understand if some authors thought that was too much work.

......really? Two minutes to type up a 'hey, this goes bye-bye in thirty days' and hit 'post'? That doesn't seem like a lot of work.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
For you. Other people get to know decide what is and is not too much work for themselves. To imply otherwise seems a little entitled.

No, actually, it's an opinion and an observation. I didn't insult anyone OR suggest anything bad about anyone, I simply stated what I thought about the original comment.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is, the people who liked the fanfic are still going to notice that an author's new series sure does read a lot like their deleted RGB slash.

For me, it's that some of the very old stuff I wrote as a teenager dealt with serious topics in a way that I now find immature and potentially hurtful and I just don't want them out there where people can stumble into them anymore. Orphaning then doesn't solve the problem at all because the problem isn't that they're attached to my name, it's that they exist. Even if no one knows that they're mine, I do.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had a couple like this, dating back to 1995, so I put a disclaimer on them.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-07 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, I just don't wanna have something I've written be out there without going back to edit it or update things, so my older/more terrible pics get deleted. And, well, to be perfectly blunt it DOES mean nothing to me that someone may miss a fic I delete. I don't really write fic FOR other people, I write them for me and post them in case others also wanna read them but if I don't want them read any more then I take them down.

+1

Doesn't mean anything to me either.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I don't feel obligated to completely relinquish control of something I wrote and no longer want public just because someone somewhere might be fond of it.

As a reader and a writer I 100% believe that the creator of the fic has all the right to keep or delete any of their fic as they see fit. They made it so they can call the shots. Like for myself I don't typically delete fic, even my really bad super old fic is still online under an old profile, but, I have on occasion deleted fic because I hated it that much. That's my right, being disappointed about it as a reader is your right, but you can't actually stop me if I don't want it up anymore.

Personally I just save fic I really like so if it does get taken down I can still read it, and if people do that to my work: cool. I don't care.

Yeah, some years back someone emailed me to ask about a fic they remembered that didn't seem to be posted online anywhere anymore, and asked me to post it again.

There was a reason it wasn't posted anywhere - it was the first fic I wrote in a new fandom, which ended up becoming my favorite fandom, and my first attempt at feeling out my OTP before they were my OTP. I cared too much about those characters to let that incredibly immature and poorly-thought-out take on them survive on the internet, so I deleted it.

But the fan who emailed? I sent the file to them so they could have it. I just didn't want anyone else new to find out about it, hahah.

AYRT.

I've done the same thing, actually pretty recently too. Someone DM'ed me on tumblr asking why a fic wasn't showing up anymore, I explained I deleted it and they asked very nicely if I'd be willing to give them a hard copy, and I did because they were reasonable about it. I'm still never going to repost it because I hated it, but that one person can have a copy, that's fine.

nothing drives me crazy like going through my bookmarks and seeing a fic been deleted, and trying to figure out which one is gone.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! And then I'll remember a specific fic I know I bookmarked and can't find it anymore later.

I wish that bookmarking privately "saved" a fic or something. I suppose I could just download the ones I bookmark.

I will orphan a story before I ever think of deleting it. Even a story I think is crap could be someone's comfort read.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-08 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
If I'm feeling like I want to delete something instead of just orphaning, it's for very personal reasons.

The last time I deleted something, it's because it turned out the fandom was chock full of antis who were more than happy to leave absolutely heinous comments on fics akin to mine. I couldn't deal with the anxiety of it once they took note of what I'd written, and orphaning wasn't going to cut it.
