I don’t think they’re always a total failure… sometimes the word changes are cute, and a few of the audience folks have great voices… but they definitely need to trim it down to one or two lines max. Letting them do a whole-ass song, or dreadfully two people in a row getting to sing, is just as you say. Luckily when it’s going to be a bad one, the 30-second-skip saves the day.
