Can someone explain to me why it's not okay to call someone a "cunt" but it's okay to call people "dicks" and "assholes"?

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to know this as well.

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Over here in the US (I think it gets used more in the UK), cunt is a rare swear that carries a lot of hate and venom behind it. "Dick" and "asshole" are more common, so they don't have nearly as much punch.

Also, "pussy" seems more on par with "dick," if anyone's suggesting sexism. "Cunt" is a big step up from that. It's also more closely tied in its gender than "dick" tends to be.

A couple of small areas using cunt in the UK does not make it acceptable or more acceptable here in general.

It is not. It is offensive and much stronger than words like dick, pussy and arse.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Explain then please, why so much porn written in British fandoms contains the word "cunt," and not "pussy," if "cunt" is barely more acceptable across the pond than it is here.

One possible reason for that is that 'pussy' is not a common UK usage but 'cunt', however offensive, is, and people who're writing porn have generally given up on being inoffensive anyway. From the way you've phrased that I don't know whether the fanfic writers you're referring to are British or American, but either way, I'd flinch at seeing 'pussy' in a story set in the UK. The most common real UKism, 'fanny', is both giggleworthy and confusing to users of US slang.

I've a feeling 'cunt' has a sort-of dual status anyway; using it to refer to genitalia is a less loaded use than just flinging it about as a generalised insult.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, gotcha. Thank you.

And no, I actually can't recall ever seeing "pussy" in a story for a British fandom. It would make me flinch too, as much as I prefer it to "cunt," given that I know it's not used.

The silliness of "fanny" leaves me mystified as to how it ever became a word referring to vag. "Fanny," to me, is a childish word for your rear end. *shrugs*

I still maintain that if you're going to rail against the use of "cunt" you should stop calling people "dicks" and "assholes". I don't care which one is more rare, it doesn't change the fact that you're still equating people with a body part. I don't understand how "pussy" is on par with "dick," either. "Pussy" has never been used in the same connotation as "dick" and never will be. I also don't see how it's more closely tied to gender, please explain.

I will continue to use all three interchangeably, and directed at men as well as women.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, where to start?

Cunt is an incredibly strong insult, and I've yet to see it used in a non-misogynistic context. I'd call it the worst single word insult you could give a female.

'Pussy', when used as an insult and not a bodypart, is almost always applied to men. It insults them because it says they're less of a man, comparing them to women. It's tied to gender and it is misogynistic, but it's also less insulting than cunt. Not because of what it implies, but because the word has less force.

'Dick' is comparable to pussy in terms of offense, but it doesn't carry with it the same negative gender assumptions that pussy does. The people with dicks are more privileged than the people without dicks.

But in a way it doesn't even matter. If you call someone a cunt, they will be far more insulted than if you call them a dick. Words have different meanings and connotations and strengths. The reason you don't call people cunts is that it's very, very insulting. I've known women who've slapped people for calling them a cunt (a disproportionate response, perhaps, but it lets you know how strong an insult they found it). It's essentially the same reason you don't use swear words in a job interview, or call your mother a fuckhead.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's stupid. Negro and black technically mean the same thing, but one is acceptable and the other is offensive. A faggot is just a bundle of sticks. Social connotations play a much bigger role in determining a word's meaning than dictionary definitions.

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Insults are tied to emotion, not rationality. In general, most people will feel more strongly, and be hurt more deeply, by being called a cunt than a dick or an asshole. I say pussy and dick are on the same level, having the same level of crudeness, not having the same meaning. Like crap and heck are on about the same level (crap being somewhat more offensive than heck), while shit is far cruder than either.

And by closely tied to gender, I mean mean someone uses the word cunt, it carries a connotation that being female (or female-like, although I don't know that I've ever heard a man called a cunt) is the root of whatever problem the user has with the person they're saying it to. Calling someone a dick implies that they are rude and arrogant -- that certain traits we consider masculine (and bad) are the problem, not being male in and of itself.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just wanted to try to explain.

I've more often heard men called 'cunts' than women; maybe that's a quirk of UK usage.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-19 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
UK usage, I think. Americans would use pussy instead, and apply cunt (almost? I've never, ever heard a man called a cunt, but I'll hedge a little) solely to women.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
There may be a dialectal difference here. 'Cunt' is much more acceptable in Britain (where it's more comparable to the American use of 'pussy') than in most of North America, where it's pretty much the worst insult you can give a woman. Moreover, even if 'dick' and 'cunt' were both equally insulting, -isms and insults against a privileged group don't carry the same weight (historical and otherwise) as those that insult the unprivileged.

As for asshole, everyone has an asshole.

[identity profile] dizzy-whore.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about it being 'much more acceptable in Britain' bit. You do hear the word 'pussy' being used a bit (maybe because I'm from London), but if you described a woman's genetalia as 'her cunt' I can't see it being taken lightly.

In the UK I usually see people reserve the word 'cunt' when they're being particularly vitriolic. I'm pretty relaxed in my swearing but if I called someone a cunt it would be seen as taking a step too far from calling them a pussy or asshole (or arsehole).

Or maybe it's a London/SE thing, I don't know? I wouldn't know much about it's usage in the North.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Asshole" is fine by me because it's not a gender-specific body part. :P

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, there's something to be said about double standards.

[identity profile] meagenimage.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
And why we're at it, why is it considered less polite to call someone "motherfucker" than "dad"? They're the same thing!

Metaquote'd (http://community.livejournal.com/metaquotes/7037744.html).

I do hope you don't mind.

The question's specious. You first have to ask if your premise is so.
