153. Wait, just because we don't expect a certain group of people to be watching means that we should insult them? So it's okay to be racist and sexist if it's behind people's backs?

...FTL.

Honestly, I'm not sure it's even worth the effort of arguing with you. The "dumb cunt" comment pretty much cements the idea that you're not merely ignorant.

Can someone explain to me why it's not okay to call someone a "cunt" but it's okay to call people "dicks" and "assholes"?

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to know this as well.

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Over here in the US (I think it gets used more in the UK), cunt is a rare swear that carries a lot of hate and venom behind it. "Dick" and "asshole" are more common, so they don't have nearly as much punch.

Also, "pussy" seems more on par with "dick," if anyone's suggesting sexism. "Cunt" is a big step up from that. It's also more closely tied in its gender than "dick" tends to be.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
A couple of small areas using cunt in the UK does not make it acceptable or more acceptable here in general.

It is not. It is offensive and much stronger than words like dick, pussy and arse.

I still maintain that if you're going to rail against the use of "cunt" you should stop calling people "dicks" and "assholes". I don't care which one is more rare, it doesn't change the fact that you're still equating people with a body part. I don't understand how "pussy" is on par with "dick," either. "Pussy" has never been used in the same connotation as "dick" and never will be. I also don't see how it's more closely tied to gender, please explain.

I will continue to use all three interchangeably, and directed at men as well as women.

There may be a dialectal difference here. 'Cunt' is much more acceptable in Britain (where it's more comparable to the American use of 'pussy') than in most of North America, where it's pretty much the worst insult you can give a woman. Moreover, even if 'dick' and 'cunt' were both equally insulting, -isms and insults against a privileged group don't carry the same weight (historical and otherwise) as those that insult the unprivileged.

As for asshole, everyone has an asshole.

[identity profile] dizzy-whore.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about it being 'much more acceptable in Britain' bit. You do hear the word 'pussy' being used a bit (maybe because I'm from London), but if you described a woman's genetalia as 'her cunt' I can't see it being taken lightly.

In the UK I usually see people reserve the word 'cunt' when they're being particularly vitriolic. I'm pretty relaxed in my swearing but if I called someone a cunt it would be seen as taking a step too far from calling them a pussy or asshole (or arsehole).

Or maybe it's a London/SE thing, I don't know? I wouldn't know much about it's usage in the North.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Asshole" is fine by me because it's not a gender-specific body part. :P

Sometimes, there's something to be said about double standards.

[identity profile] meagenimage.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
And why we're at it, why is it considered less polite to call someone "motherfucker" than "dad"? They're the same thing!

I do hope you don't mind.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
The question's specious. You first have to ask if your premise is so.

[identity profile] elmo-loves-me.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is wrong to make fun of people? Why is it wrong to insult them? I do understand that people have to be responsible for their actions, but they're also free to do whatever they want with fictional stories that aren't intended to serve as academic researches with foundation on reality.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
.........................................Seriously? Are you just missing your morals entirely? Think about that comment. You just asked why is it wrong to insult someone.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace."

Insulting someone isn't thwarting their rights or restraining their freedom; insulting someone is nothing but the expression of an opinion. If an opinion becomes dangerous, then it was society's fault said opinion became dangerous. Words don't kill people, people kill people.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...okay, but... that doesn't mean it's okay to say something mean to someone. Words are not always "just words."

Because insults don't exist in a vacuum? Racist and sexist insults have behind them the institutions that oppress minorities and women.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Insults are nothing but opinions, regardless of their ties to reality. Uninformed opinions, perhaps, but still nothing other than opinions. You can't force people to exist within a unified set of subjectives absolutes. You can, however, educate and guide them towards understanding. Like I said; insults don't oppress, people, people oppress people.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)

Actually, you can. That's basically what American slavery was.

And insults are a tool used to oppress people. You don't oppress others simply by saying, "Lo, you are oppressed." You use insults, and societal and cultural norms, and economic power, and physical force and the threat of it, and a thousand other ways to oppress people, and no oppression takes place in a cultural vacuum.

Look. You sound like a college freshmen flush with the first couple weeks of her Intro to Philosophy course, either that or someone who's just read Atlas Shrugged. Assuming you're in college, go find some older female professors, emeritus aged, and ask them about their time in grad school, and how their male fellow students and professors treated them, and how the insults they had hurled at them affected them.

"You can't force people to exist within a unified set of subjectives absolutes."

...What the HELL are you talking about? You've just pretty much defined what racism and sexism do.

[identity profile] athousandwinds.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Because it hurts them. And when you're talking racism, sexism, classism, homphobia, etc. you're hurting a lot of people when there's absolutely no need for it. Yes, people are free to write or say whatever they want. However, everyone else is equally free to criticise them for it.
