I can definitely relate to having a fic that I just hate that everyone else in the fandom just loves for some reason.

Like... I'm sure it's well-written-- I mean, it must be, right? SO many people love it, and there are certainly places where our tastes/standards overlap, but... between being an AU I'm generally uninterested in when compared to the canon universe, and some tropes/plot points that I would avoid like-- well, like a very specific plague...

I've been in a couple fandoms that had That One Fic that I hated, and usually I could find other people who I could commiserate with, but this ONE fandom... and its ONE fic... it's super inescapable to the point where I went from 'eh this definitely isn't for me' to 'FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE'.

I relate to this so hard. I think I know what fic you're talking about and I've never read it because it has so many Do Not Wants for me, but I am absolutely stumped as to how something like that could be THE must-read fanfiction in one fandom. Because I always assumed that some of those Do Not Wants were common ones that other people hated as well.
Someone who has read it and hated it told me that the characters are horribly OOC (you know the type: replace the names and you'd have no clue what fandom / characters it's supposed to be). And even though I myself haven't read it, I can definitely see how a fanfiction like that would have the characters acting completely OOC, which makes its popularity even more strange.

Is one of those Do Not Wants killing a beloved character off in an even worse way than the same fans raged at show canon doing?

I gotta say, if someone else actually finds That One Fic exactly as off-putting as I do, I feel a little more sane and I am psychically hugging you rn.

Oh yes, that is at the top of the list. I bet there are more people who find the fic off-putting, it's just that those people don't say anything for fear of getting dog-piled.

Marry me.

Same here. There's a fic that always gets tossed around as being absolutely perfect and wonderful and it is well-written, but I freaking hate it. I have no idea how it got so popular.

NAYRT but ugh, same. And I'll try to give the fic a chance because so many people like it but...all I can think is WHY.
