It's very much unpopular otherwise people would have proposed it as law already.

I don't see anything wrong with having that reaction to pedophiles.

Just because people in power are creeps who are preventing it doesn't mean a large part of the world shares it. The creeps just have a lot of power. Honestly a knee jerk reaction to murder is a problem because when people have it and act on it, they get it wrong at times.

You may not think its that much of a problem but what if someone was irrationally dead set on the idea that you were a pedophile, and it led to you getting horribly hurt? Its a reaction that can, and has been manipulated for generations by manipulative people using it against their enemies. I don't know about you but personally I'd find it a pretty dangerous thing if it could be abused by say, the GOP against gay people and trans people and other vulnerable groups.
