I mean, it's often true (though not always) that we identify with our fave characters, and people do often take slights against their faves personally. But honestly I'm more likely to think someone who hates a character is projecting. Except in their case it's usually that they had someone in their life who was hurtful, and the character reminds them of that person, so the character becomes identified in their mind as being That Kind Of Person and from there on out everything they do is seen through a lens of suspicion, contempt, and mistrust.

At the end of the day, it's just fiction. It doesn't really matter if you're projecting positively or negatively onto a character. I just know that for me it tends to be the negative projecting that stands out most.

Also, they tend to go hand in hand. "Character A is a precious king who deserves the world and has done nothing wrong ever--and fuck Character X and Character Y for being horrible, awful abusers, they can both choke."
