I don't think formatting is necessarily harder on AO3. It's more convenient for editing and doesn't randomly eat characters from stories I posted 10 years ago.

I can see how it's easier to search for things though, since at least tags are limited and things like crossovers are separate from the main fandoms.

There's a button on AO3 you can click to exclude crossovers or exclusively show crossovers

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm aware. I'm saying the crossovers are separate to begin with, so less chance of running into something you didn't intend to. (Though yes, I realize some people don't properly categorize either.)

Filtering and tagging are way better on AO3? pretty sure that's why people prefer it

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I love that I can exclude things and search for more than 1 pairing at a time and download all the text in one go and that all of my favorite authors are there and I can search for tags outside of specific fandoms/pairings.

That said, I'm glad you have a thing you like and I hope it lasts for a long time.

Hey, you do you. There are some things that piss me off about the way AO3 handles some things, including the editor (and I follow someone who has worked on it as a dev and now that I have seen them discuss some of the specifics I'm kind of horrified), but at the end of the day I prefer it. Doesn't mean everyone has to. And apparently there are some fandoms that never migrated, so clearly you're not the only one who finds ff.net perfectly fine.

And I'm kind of glad ff.net still exists because last night I had the weird thought to go check how long ago I wrote a particular fic that predated AO3, since I uploaded a ton of the preexisting stuff all in 2010. Thanks to ff.net, confirmed that I posted the first few chapters over 20 years ago. Also found a few stories I'd forgotten existed because they were posted around the same time. So I'm pleased the archive is still there, and honestly would be sad to see it go, even if it's kind of clunky for me now. It's a huge part of internet history, at least for me.

I couldn't disagree more strongly, but that's cool, you do you.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike fanfiction.net because when one of my fics was targeted by a spambot, there was nothing I could do about it except take the fic down.

A03 does have profiles. It's just that even the people who use them, don't bother to update often because we currently live in a fannish era where no one wants to do any work to track an author. That's why authors put everything at the bottom of their fics, because people won't read it unless it's right in front of their eyes.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought people trashed FF.net because it was kind of glitchy and they've done purges of stuff through the years.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that and the Age of Malware.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Also there was a group of people who would mass-report fics they didn't like and get them taken down. I wouldn't post my stuff there today.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh? But I've found all of those concerns true over the last 20 years. Except possibly the Twitter updates. If it's dying, it's the slowest death so far.

I can’t find anything on ff.net. Needs a better tagging system.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I do like FFnet, but there's been a fear of the site getting closed down in recent years so the future of the site has been feeling really uncertain.

I could not agree more strongly with this secret, OP. For me, I'd add on the ease of changing font size and margins. Plus people actually have bookmarks that lead me to new authors/fandoms!

Just got a hankering for a fandom from the late '00s last night, headed right to FFN, and was reminded why I like that site as a reader.

I find FF.net's uploading system to be stupidly complicated compared to Ao3.

But what bothers me the most is that it doesn't seem to care much about readers/commenters bullying writers. There have been multiple groups of bullies who had accounts just to harass people , one of them even bragged about all his ban evading in his bio .

I have yet to have problems with commenters on Ao3. Either they're efficiently dealt with or they don't ever bother bc an author can delete their comment.or screen it.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I thought FF.net took down porny fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it did.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-13 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I do find some things easier on FF.N, but AO3 is still vastly superior in other ways. Especially the tagging system, and the ability to exclude things.
